“Good hotel, busy in August in Edinburgh, Malmaison can be recommended”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

We were on a week tour of Scotland including Islay and the Highlands and Edinburgh was our last stop. During the Edinburgh Festival in August things were very busy (and expensive) in the decent hotels, so Malmaison (which is actually in Leith, Edinburgh's port) came up with good reviews on Trip Advisor so we thought we would give it a try. Slightly awkward to find, even with GPS, but once settled in all good. Very nice room overlooking the harbour and The Shore leading down to Malmaison is full of good restuarants and bars - which I can vouch for because we went in virtually every one of them! So Malmaison location is nice but remember you are 40-45 walking minutes (or 5-10 cab minutes) from central Edinburgh though Leigh has plenty of its own attractions. Some odd bits and pieces like mini bar dispute which was annoying. I think hotels should switch to free consumption mini bars in room because the current count and check system is a nuisance and leads to frequent disputes. We did not drink the wine. £2 supplement for cooked full breakfast was a ''hidden'' fee (hotel will respond that it is well advertised and the breakfast was excellent so I am not complaining). Location of Malmaison was really nice in the harbour area, some excellent cafes, restuarants and bars nearby including some of 'Edinburgh's'' best restaurants (good luck getting booked in during August). Thumbs up at Malmaison.

Excellent room, clean, tidy, everything you would need, such as iron, board and trouser press. Staff were mainly Polish and excellent, nothing was too much trouble. I asked if they knew where I could obtain a wet shave, and also the location of a kiltmaker: information was provided within 30 minutes.
Breakfast I the Bistro was heavenly. It's amazing how many chefs are unable to produce poached eggs properly. This chef was spot on with the finest poached eggs ever encountered in an hotel, the rest of the breakfast matched this standard and the Polish waitressing was attentive and slick.
My only complaint would be 2 sources of noise: The Hotel plumbing produces intrusive levels of noise, the sound of rooms flushing permeates to other rooms, and the old chestnut of slamming doors is present, you would think in this day and age that a solution could be found for this problem.
I would recommend this hotel, but avoid the bar as the prices are painful, but that's the nature of hotel bars........the barmen however were superb.

Had to upgrade to superior room as room we were allocated was very disappointing. Marks on cushion covers on the bed, iron burn mark on the furnishings and frayed carpet. To quote a previous reviewer, "not quite boutique hotel experience".
However, the second room was a huge improvement and made our two night stay much more enjoyable, (at an additional cost of £20 per night). Staff were very friendly and food was delicious.
Would go back but would be wary, had they been fully booked and a change of room had not been possible it would have been a totally different experience.

Room Tip: Rooms to the front of the hotel have a nicer view and less noise from the docks.

First night woken by fire alarm, 2nd night there was a dog in the room next door, the owners in their wisdom thought it would be a good idea to leave it in the room whilst they went back down to the bar around midnight, we informed reception.

When we checked out we mentioned the 2 nights of disruptions, they didn't want to hear it.

Enjoyed a two night stay here with my boyfriend. Although the room is lovely on closer inspection there are minor things that could be upgraded (tatty headboard, chipped paint etc)

The breakfast was lovely and we were given the choice of upgrading to the cooked menu. The bar does lovely cocktails, particularly the Bramble!

Staff very friendly and helpful.

Unwittingly, I picked the first day of the Edinburgh Festival for my stay. Prices were a little higher than expected but most of the 'competition' were fully booked.
Helpful, friendly staff. Rooms very clean and comfortable. We had a view across Leith Docks from our window.
Our stay was marred by the fire alarm going off at 4am and the hotel being evacuated. Fortunately, we were not outside very long and it was fairly warm. Just got back to sleep and the bin lorry arrived outside to empty the bins. Neither of these annoyances were within the control of the hotel.
Continental breakfast was OK but nothing to rave about. We didn't eat dinner in the hotel and so cannot comment on that.
The only other niggle was that bottled water was available in the minibar but had to be paid for unlike most hotels where it is complimentary.
Overall, I would recommend the hotel but I found it a bit overpriced for what you get.

I have visited Edinburgh on numerous occasions and stayed in several city centre hotels. Although the Malmaison is only 2miles from the centre, and was easy to get to, it felt like a totally different side to Edinburgh. There were several amazing seafood restaurants right on the doorstep including the Ship on the Shore which I highly recommend, and the Michelin Starred The Kitchin.

The hotel itself has that lovely boutique ambiance. The staff at reception were very friendly and efficient. We arrived a few hours before the check-in time but were able to leave our cases before heading out to explore the Festival Fringe. Once back at the hotel and in our room we were pleasantly suprised with how spacious our standard twin was. The room was spotless and full of lovely little touches. The wine and minibar supplies were of a great standard and reasonably priced.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to any visitor to Edinburgh, its a nice way to see a different side to a familiar city, the staff were great, and the beds were comfy. I will definitely be back and am looking forward to it!!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 112, it overlooked the side of the hotel and was nice and quiet.

It's the mother of all Malmaison's. The former house of ill-repute now has a reputation that's second to none, and it's also just a short taxi ride away from Waverley Station.
