This was our second stay at the Mal and stayed for two nights, only wish it could have been longer. We booked through alpha rooms for room only, when we got to the hotel we were actually booked in for bed and continental breakfast, which was a pleasant surprise. We decided to upgrade to a suite, the first room we were given was not to hubbys taste so the staff promptly moved us to another suite, room 318, without any question. Nothing was a problem to the hotel staff who were all very polite and helpful throughout our stay. The hotel is in an excellent location for good bars and restaurants, one of our favourites was The Grannary just up the street from the Mal. There is a really nice and relaxed atmosphere there and you can eat in the bar area or in the dining area, the food was lovely. Edinburgh city centre is within easy reach either by bus or taxi. Cant wait to return.

Stayed for our wedding anniversary - have previously stayed at the Newcastle, Liverpool and Manchester Mals so was confident of the usual high standard of service and accommodation. Sadly the Hotel is looking a little on the careworn side with some of the public areas definitely in need of refurbishment.
The service too was not what we have come to expect - our breakfast order was forgotten and when it did eventually arrive nearly an hour after we sat down it wasnt even hot.
We've stayed in much less expensive hotels and had a better experience.

The room was superb, great size and appeared to have been recently redecorated. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The only disappointment was we stayed for an evening meal in the Brasserie, the food to say the least was average pub standard grub. I ordered the steak , the most expensive main. It came overcooked. We have stayed at MalMaison Hotels numerous times and this is the first time I have been disappointed with the food. The staff also seemed inexperienced -not clearing dishes away before the next course was served. I would recommend staying at the hotel but don't eat there. A bit late but on leaving a local Taxi driver also advised that it hasn't got a good reputation for food locally.

We stayed 2 nights for our honeymoon in the Arthurs suite which i believe is one of the nicer suites in the hotel. Although clean, the hotel is shabby and in need of re-decoration. Our room was an attic room on the top floor, very claustrophobic, low ceilings and very little light (there were only 3 dim lamps in the bedroom area). There was a total of 5 very small windows in the room and only one of them opened making it very stuffy. The double bed was really small and hard - avoid at all costs if you like a soft mattress, i like my mattresses hard but this was a joke!. When booking we opted for the package with breakfast which was £40 more that the standard package. Midweek breakfast is served 7am-10, we arrived in the restaurant at 10am but much to our disappointed were refused breakfast! On the second night my husband became ill and was up all night, we checked out early next day and did not have breakfast as he was too poorly. When we were checking out, as we hadn't had breakfast on both of the mornings we asked for this to be removed from our bill but the duty manager was rude, very cold and unsympathetic and refused to deduct it from out bill despite the fact that we never had any breakfast. He kept saying to me that he couldn't remove the charge, he could but just didn't want to. Only by husband arguing with him did he remove the charge, giving the impression that because i am a woman he could get away with it with me. Over all our room was uncomfortable and claustrophobic , the place is a little tired looking and the management are very un-cooperative (good luck if you ever have any problems).
The only good points are that the general staff are very friendly and the parking is good. Sadly this is not enough for us to ever return.
The area is nice with plenty of restaurants, bars and other hotels (which we will be checking in to on our next visit to Edinburgh).

We stayed at the Mal midweek over the long Jubilee break which was full. We've stayed here a number of times as we like the location, within walking distance down Leith Walk of town but also in the centre of Leith. There are a number of good bars and restaurants in Leith, notably Ship on the Shore to eat in and a couple of real ale pubs with very mixed clientele. The Mal itself had its usual warm welcome, the food was good and the breakfasts had their usual wide range and choice. The choice of drinks in the bar was massive but the prices were a little on the high side.

What does need attention are the rooms as they're starting to look a touch jaded and out of date. I was hoping that there'd be iPod docks (for example) in the rooms. The Mal sometimes seems to be full of its own self importance and grandeur and they need to do something different to be able to back this claim up. I travel a lot for work and other hotel brands have caught up and even surpassed what Malmaison has done well for a number of years. It's time to claim the high ground again.
