“Excellent spot on the Royal Mile”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2013

We had a great time at this hostel. It was just up the hill from the train station and right on the Royal Mile. It is close to everything you'll want to see, including the castle. There are restaurants and pubs galore. We also went on an excellent pub crawl. Inquire within! Noise of course can be a bit of an issue, but nothing earplugs can help to solve -- or just stay out all night.

Room Tip: As with most hostels, it pays to upgrade to a non-dorm room. Otherwise, try to get a room with the...

We have just completed a week long holiday involving a 5 day trip into the highlands and a few days in Edinburgh. Our first night in Edinburgh at the beginning of the week was in a different hostel and to be quite honest we were not looking forward to coming back into Edinburgh if all hostels were going to be like the Belford. You can imagine my surprise when we were greeted by a gorgeous old heritage building, extremely helpful staff, free wifi (reception only), a large kitchen and garden area, clean rooms and even cleaner shower/toilet facilities. We were placed in a room on the 7th floor called Posh & Becks, which really helped the leg muscles as there are no lifts. The stairwell is redolent of the building's old life as a school but just adds to the character of the place. The room itself is tiny with a bunkbed (double on the bottom, single on top) and a really plush, comfortable carpet which makes it sometimes hard to shut the door. A nice touch is the outside wall is the old brick building, which has not been plastered over and adds to the ambience. The top bunk is quite hard and uncomfortable but the double bed is very comfy and hard to leave in the morning. The showers are good but having two taps to regulate the heat is a pain when most are used to power showers; however the cubicle was spotless and smelled clean. Towels are placed out for people to use for face washing which is a nice homely touch. The kitchen is massive and you can see it used to be a school by the size of it and the recreation area. The garden area (or smokers corner) is small but ok. All in all, adding in the computer room, the comfy reception area and the fact that you need to show a pass to enter the building ( and they'll store your luggage is your connection home/onwards is later than check out) and you have a hostel that is close to perfection. All you would need for total perfection would be a TV and a sink in the room. Keys are £10 deposit. Breakfast is available for £1.90

Room Tip: The smaller rooms have power sockets. The higher floors have less noise coming in from outside.

We stayed for one night in a private twin room on the top floor, named Posh n Becks. Everything was very clean, our room was spotless and so were the bathrooms. There were two sinks, two toilet stalls, and two shower stalls so I never had to wait and hot water was plentiful. Everything was checked and cleaned so often I never had to use a hand towel someone else had used. Everyone was very friendly and there are tons of spots to hang out and use the WiFi (which didn't reach our room) as well as a kitchen. Noise was not a problem and they let us store our luggage before and after checkout, which was great. The location cannot be beat, right in the middle of the Royal Mile! Great stay, will be back for sure.

Room Tip: Posh n Becks (a private twin) on the top floor has a bunk bed with a double on the bottom and twin o...

The hostel is located right off the Royal Mile, and a block away from the Sandeman's New Europe tours meeting point! Most of the staff were amazing. Their kitchen is well equipped and I never lacked for hot water when taking a shower. To use wifi or a charging point, you need to use the lobby. For travelers seeking to meet other people, I wouldn't recommend High Street Hostel. They have many long-term guests who can get very cliquey. It would be great if they cleaned out the fridge, too. It smelled like something died in all 4 of the mini-fridges. Overall I guess I would stay there again. The low price made it worth it!

Quick stay here. Due to the good location it was quite busy. Bathrooms were clean but not enough hooks and things when showering. Rooms were ok.

The internet only works in the downstairs reception area which is a bit of a pain so it is constantly packed with people.

£2 for b'fast is not bad. Cereal, toast etc.

There are quite a few permanent stayers here, so make sure you ask for to be put not in the same room as one of them!

Very good location. Bathrooms and showers always clean. Rooms are very clean and comfortable, free lockers. But the main highlight for me was the staff. Very friendly and accommodating, very knowledgeable about Edinburgh. I had just come in from an all night bus ride and I was able to check in early and have a whole room to myself to recover. I would absolutely recommend this hostel to everyone. The strong smell that people are complaining about here is not a toilet smell, but the smell of carbolic soap which was used in schools (which this hostel used to be)!
