The Hostel stay close to the main street, in very nice old building. You can walk to the castle and to the most interesting points. To the hostel gasts there is a discount in the breakfest in a Café. The room was very big, with kitchen and a good bed. The shower was poor, without light in the cabine, so we had to keep the door open and wet all the bathroom. Hot water finished to fast.

Room Tip: The rooms with privet bathroom are in the fifth stock, is a long way with heavy luggage.

Great team, nice common rooms. The comfort is worth the price. Bathrooms are not very nice but it's an very old hostel. Don't expect too much if you are looking for a quiet and very clean hostel. The spirit is more to a have a good time, and it succeed to it. Free wifi and Free DVD

Room Tip: Ask for 34A building if possible (bit more expensive but definitively better)

I booked to stay in the Edinburgh Backpackers Hostel for two nights. I lasted one. The indifferent, chain-smoking staff reluctantly extinguished their cigarettes to check me in, and as I was staying in a single room, was told I would be staying in a separate building to the main one. I was pointed down a dingy alleyway - very uncomfortable for travelling alone. Inside I found a decent enough, small room. I managed to have a luke warm shower in a fairly filthy bathroom (no basics, such as soap, or toilet paper on a holder!), and bunkered down for a night of pure hell. You can hear every single noise from outside the street, which matches perfectly with your birds-eye view of the dingy alleyway due to the blinds not being long enough. You can hear every single noise within the building - I'm talking footsteps, doors opening, people going up and down stairs. It was the loudest hostel I have ever stayed in. If you require more than 1 hours sleep, do not stay here. It might be cheap and close, but don't bother. Unless all you plan on doing is drinking day and night.... To make matters worse, there is no wifi in the dungeon section. Loud, boring and stinky.

The lack of hot water is ok in Morocco, not in below 0° Scotland. Also I hadn't stayed in a hostel where they charge you for every little thing... even for the luggage room or the use of computers. I know hostels in the UK are usually bad compared to continental Europe, but this one is the worst I have experienced. I mean, there must be worse, but this honestly is the worst I have stayed at. Dirty carpets, cold atmosphere, too many floors and no lift, horrible bathrooms, ugly interiors, cold, cold, cold. I had to walk half naked from the room to the showers because there is nowhere to leave your stuff while you shower. Ah, the heating system in the rooms is SH*T.

it was nice, got a single room for 2 days. The location is the best, really on city center, near everything. 5 minutes walking to the castle, several tours start right in the corner. they have a deal with the restaurant next door to get a full breakfast for 3,5 pounds.
Only thing I did not like was the showers, they were shared and you dont have anywhere to leave your stuff other that on hang outside the shower, which is annoying if ur traveling solo for example

Location really good, in the heart of Edinburgh. But little atmosphere. Since I had my room on the first floor I didn't find lack of a lift as a big problem, but the story would be completely different on the top floor. I stayed there one night during the Fringe Festival so was busy and a bit expensive. The worse thing is the cleanness didn't meet my expectation.

Stayed there for 4 nights. It was the worst experience ever, very dirty rooms, that were never cleaned, severely dirty toilets and showers. terrible kitchen too, no place to keep anything and impossible to cook there due to the lack of properly functioning hotplates. If you do want to eat something there is no place to sit in the dining room, for such a large hostel the dining room is tiny with 3 small tables and a couch and this is made worse by the fact that the so called employees of the hostel take up half the room all day long, because they are not really bothered about cleaning anything. Also, to get to the top bunk on the bed is really difficult because there is no ladder. Truly a terrible experience.
