The Garden Restaurant was recommended to us hence we booked on a recent long weekend to the city.
Lovely setting and true to character with tables partitioned off to keep conversations private.
Food and wine excellent with extensive wine list and staff that were aware of the choices.
Service was attentive without being intrusive.
We were travelling light with airline cabin baggage hence arrived in jeans and tee shirt although were still treated well.
One minor criticism was that kitchen staff walked through the restaurant at various times with produce etc although this probably could not be helped with the age of the building.
Overall lived up to expectations and would certainly recommend.

After an awful experience the previous night at another restaurant, we were a bit wary about this dinner. However, the food was the best we had on our entire trip of 5 countries. The staff were amazing; very polite. The service was quick and the atmosphere was amazing. Not to mention, the location of the place is the best you could ask for. A very fond memory for my father and I. Thank you for the amazing experience.

Great place to stop for lunch or dinner after touring the castle! It had a unique atmosphere and tasty food. I got the duck (delicious!) and my husband got the "3 little pigs" entree. He was not as impressed with his meal as I was with mine, but it was still quite good. Food is a little bit pricey, but it's certainly worth the trip!

We went for dinner last Sunday. Great building with a wonderful atmosphere but food really didn't justify the £100+ price tag for two people.
My husband was thrilled to see steak tartar on the menu but found it pretty tasteless with several key ingredients apparanty missing. The creme brulee was a very claggy affair.
The lady on the next table was obviously struggling with a very tough steak. When this was pointed out to the waiter who had asked "is everything alright", his repy was "take your time!"

My wife and I spent a great weekend here. The hotel has real character something distinctly lacking in other hotels we visit, and is just a very different experience.
This is not a business hotel and probably not a hotel for young families (although I suspect they would cope admirably) and it has limited wifi, no gym or business centre. However, you don't go to the Witchery for that - it's more sort of old world / gothic opulence with a few essential mod cons thrown in you go to for a relaxing or romantic weekend.
Each suite is different and each has it's own unique little quirks - mirrors outside the windows to give "views", four poster beds etc. And they really are suites encompassing several rooms and, oddly, a kitchenette. I suppose for your personal chef?
Breakfast is delivered by the memorable Roxy in the mornings and is laid out in your drawing room for you, and our only gripe is although lovely, I had assumed a certain grandeur from the hype which wasn't really evident.
Location is fantastic and you can also get reservations through reception at their great restaurant very easily as well as other good places in town.
Highly recommmended

Room Tip: They all seem great but Semptil Suite was very quiet.

It is sad to find a place lacking. The Witchery still ticks the boxes for atmosphere and the a la carte may be good but surely the set menu is a kind of shop window for a restaurant. The Sunday lunch offering had few and rather unenticing choices. We sensed pleasant surprises but no, the mackerel pate was just that, and the hogget was an unattractive bit of meat and bone with a few tiny-but tiny- potatoes sprinkled round . Pudding was good.
But overall what a disappoinrment especially at £33 . There are simiar set muens in Edinburgh for around £10.
And so slow. We sat down at 130, the main course arrived at 3 and the pudding around 4.

I felt very sorry for visitors to Edinburgh expecting a treat.

Went there for a special occasion and were both really disappointed. The portions were small, food not very impressive (and quite cold) and service not that attentive. It should be far better for the amount it costs.
