Owner description: A busy street lined with shops, historic monuments and restaurants.

Shopping on Princes Street certainly isn't a pleasure - the shops are generally mediocre (high street chains you'll see anywhere) and the crowds can be overwhelming. Most disappointing is that despite the street's amazing location -- beside the park, with spectacular views of the castles and the old town - there is no attempt to improve the area. Rather than pedestrianise and encourage street performers, outdoor dining and live music, the council has built a tram straight though the middle of it and sends virtually every bus in the city down this one road. The result is to confine pedestrians to a tiny pavement. A shame.

Princes St and George St are the places to go for shopping. All the high st stores are here and of course the gardens are opposite. great for a walk and for views of the castle.

Princes St once was the main shopping area to go to in Edinburgh. It had all the main high street stores you would expect and you got to enjoy the beauty of the castle looking over you while you did your shopping. However over time a number of stores have closed and the variety of shops has decreased greatly. There are a number of empy buildings now and a lot of the open ones look pretty drab from the outside. If you need clothes there are a number of good options. If you want something different and nice shops to browse in then this isn't the place. There are a few good shops in the side streets and quite a lot of good shops on Rose St which are more unique. So you don't have to go far for something a bit nicer. Princes St now is just McDonalds, Tartan shops, Clothes shops (from primark, H&M to a few independent places) and then Debenhams, Marks and Spencer and probably the best shop on the Street, Jenners.

Edinburgh used to be a truly lovely city but now it is terrible. Princes Street looks tatty and it looks as though the history and the heart has been taken out of it.

Long street with lots of expensive shops on. The tram lines are finally down but no trams yet, maybe when they get here it may add something?
