The Royal Mile shouts with interesting shops of every type. The closes (originally alleys) have many hidden gems. History is beneath every step you take.

Overrated with tourist shops owned by a company with different outlets. Coffee shops and churches are most interesting

The Royal Mile is pretty much infested with souvenir shops and other tourist traps but if you can ignore them the buildings are great. Make sure to check out the small laneways that lead off it as you progress up to the castle. A lot of good pubs if you need a break. Banks are a different thing; the only one I found was up about halfway between North Bridge Street and the Castle on your left.

Face it. This is a tourist trap. But a good one. Very clean, fabulous architecture, friendly people, no bargains but quality products. A nice place to walk.

Lots of shopping and restaurants! The St. Giles’ Cathedral, Writers Museum, Camera Obscura, and Scotch Whisky Experience are all along the Royal Mile. There are a number of places to buy souvenirs and scarves.
