great stroll up this street. Great place to get souvenirs. St Giles Cathedral is about half way along and absolutely breathtaking inside. I thought it was even more beautiful than Notre Dame, France (my opinion only). Lovely souvenirs to purchase inside Cathedral shop. Got some "Holy" socks for the mum in law. Made in Scotland. always a bonus not PRC.

If heaven decreed that I could walk but just one mile each day, it would definitely not be the now overly-commercialized Royal Mile, esp. near the entrance to Edinburgh Castle. You can't miss it if you're visiting the Castle. It's lined with shoppes and street performers abound. Just grin and bear it.

If you visited Edinburgh and missed the Royal Mile...I'd be astounded. The mile is the center piece of tourism in Old Town. It offers a nice array of tourist shops and restaurants. Most attractions and Highland tours leave from one spot or another on the mile. It's a good time.

You can't help but be awed by the history and scenery of this street...but you'll be taking it all in with lots and lots of tourists! Still, you have to walk the cobblestone streets and imagine how things might have been in Old Town back in the day...

Yes, it was a glorious sunny day and most places look great in the sunshine. But the Royal Mile is something else. Great atmosphere, street artists and loads of bars and restaurants. It also has a lot of character which is no surprise considering the history of the place.
When you head toward the castle, keep an eye on the right. Mary Kings Close is an attraction well worth a visit. An example of how life was way back when!
