“True Luxury”
Reviewed September 13, 2012

We stayed at the Howard a while back - before we were on trip advisor.

I'm writing about it now following a recent stay at a nearby hotel (see seperate review of the Norton) which also claimed to be a luxury hotel but failed to deliver a luxury experience for a similar price.

The butler service was great although I have to say that all staff were friendly and efficient.

The room was spacious and the bed comfortable.

The rooms, the decor and the fittings were in keeping with the period building.

Breakfast was delicious and plentiful.

The Howard is nicely situated for walking around Edinburgh city centre but without being right in the centre.

Couldn't find any fault. Would stay here again.

A friend and myself were both excited to stay at the Howard for the weekend. We expected nothing less than 5* quality and service, something reminiscent of what the savoy would provide. We were not only disappointed but disgruntled and the list was endless. It was brought to our attention the hotel changed ownership and it is my professional opinion that the new management have tried to cut costs and clearly are not leaving up to the reputation they try to perpetuate. Below is a small list of why YOU SHOULD NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY :

1) Rude, unfriendly and unhelpful staff
2) No personal 'butler' service as they state on their website
3) Decoy needs to be refurbished
4) Hygiene and cleanliness was questionable
5) Breakfast was disappointing to say the least
6) I would have expected better bed linens and a daily change

My honest opinion is to please not ruin your holiday by staying at a 2 star hotel

Had a fantastic stay at the Howard. The staff were great. On arrival we were offered a nice cup of tea with home made shortbread. We were then shown to our room which had been upgraded to a junior suite with 4 windows overlooking the front. The four poster bed was also impressive.
The staff could not have been nicer - particular mention goes to Jack who was unbelievably attentative.
We had a meal in the restaurant - the fillet steak was the business!
We had breakfast in the bedroom which was out of this world
Will be back again for a city treat

We thoroughly enjoyed The Howard. The staff were excellent, breakfasts amazing, a wonderful room. The butler service is what separates it from other comparable hotels. We had dinner served in our own room at no extra charge, clothes were pressed, tea and coffee were delivered whenever we wanted. We wouldn't stay anywhere else when we next return to Edinburgh.

Unwelcoming reception staff who didn't even acknowledge me as I waited to be checked in. A single glazed window facing the stone covered street with incessant cars driving by. Irritatingly noisy. What did they do? They closed the curtain and that's that. The hotel is full is all the answer I got. If you like the oppressive burgundy red interior and don't mind the noise, go for it.

It was some time ago that we stayed at The Howard on one of our many visits to Edinburgh for my husbands birthday. Although it was some time ago, we have such fond memories that I felt I must write a review.
The staff were exceptional in their care, from check in to check out. There are many nice touches that others have covered that start when you arrive and your car is parked for you. We stayed in a terrace suite, that has it's own entrance from the street. I had ordered a birthday cake and champagne for my husband's birthday, see photo of beautiful presentation. We had a really lovely meal in the restaurant one of the nights, which was quite exceptional. During the meal, we commented to the waiter that it would be lovely to have coffee on the terrace outside our room. Between courses, we saw the waiter passing by outside first carrying a table, then the chairs, then the candles and the coffee! We were so tickled by this, especially when he told us our coffee was waiting on the terrace - see photo. Unfortunately my photo is only of the table after we had cleared it, but it was quite magical. Thank you to all at The Howard for a memorable stay.

If we visit Edinburgh in future this is the only hotel my wife and I will stay in. Our recent visit was perfect in every respect from the time we arrived to the time we checked out. The staff were superb, the room spacious and extremely comfortable and the food exceptional. In fact breakfast for £5 per person was the best value for money we have ever had. Also book yourself in for dinner each evening as the attention to detail and the quality of the food are excellent. The Howard provides affordable luxury in a central Edinburgh location.

Another super review and once again it is fantastic to read about one of our guests leaving The Howard with such a positive impression. I must just clarify, however, the special breakfast rate of £5.00 per person is only available when you book on line on our own website and order this in advance.
