“Yanish the great”
Reviewed September 30, 2013 via mobile

Ok I think his name was Yanish. He is the breakfast supervisor. He was an excellent help.

Those who do not think hilton honors diamond is worth much here, The desk guy at check in added breakfast for the asking because of my diamond and breakfast is £20 each.

Descent upgrade and great breakfast.

For the past four days we have been entertaining a group of 16 Chaine members from Denmark, who are visiting Scotland to experience great food and a tour of a number of distilleries. The Waldorf is our preferred hotel of visiting Chaine members, who only want the best. They were delighted with our choice.

After four days of tours and visits, the finale, was a gala dinner in the Pomapour Restaurant for our visitors plus local Scottish members - 26 people in all. Nick, Craig and Peter put on the most spectacular fine dining event you could imagine. We have a similar event planned for the end of October - I can't wait.

The Galvin Brothers have another success here and well done Waldorf Astoria.

Room Tip: The hotel has been completely renovated - the rooms are exceptional

I'm in Edinburgh every week for business and have a choice of hotels, having tried quite a few they never seem to quite match the service and attention to detail you get at the Caley so I always end up coming back!

The basic rooms are a bit small but the deluxe ones are very nicely done out and quite big with good, modern bathrooms & plenty of water pressure. Worth the extra if you're paying for a special stay.

Wifi is fast enough for lovefilm streaming (which can't be said for a surprising number of other hotels in Edinburgh) and as a gold member the free drink in the bar is appreciated - you can even have a free in room film if you forgo 1000 bonus points!

As the other reviewers have noted, the staff are excellent with the team taking care of Peacock Alley in the evening of particular note - ended up spending a whole evening down there working rather than in my room in no small part thanks to their excellent service - the evening bites in there were great as well.

Room Tip: If you can afford one of the deluxe rooms (or have Hilton status for an upgrade) then it's well...

The Caledonian has pride of place when it comes to Central Edinburgh at the West End of Princes St and in the shadow of Edinburgh castle. The elegant interior would grace any occasion and the restaurants offers fine dining and the Caley Bar and Peacock Alley are an excellent place to sit and enjoy a sumptuous afternoon tea. If you are looking to stay centrally and can afford a premium for an hotel room then this is for you.
As a Diamond HHonors member I would probably not choose to stay here again although I could not fault the service, the staff or the location I do not think that the Waldorf Astoria has the same level of enhanced appreciation for Diamond tier members. There was no upgrade and although it does not have an executive lounge there were no significant benefits for its elite tier members. Whilst in Edinburgh I walked a few hundred yards down to the Sheraton which does have a club lounge and offers SPG members 15% off their food bills. The next time I visit Edinburgh I will definitely go there as I believe if offers far better rewards for its loyal members

Stayed her with wife and teenage kids on a weekend break. Location is excellent, right in the centre, close to the Castle and Royal Mile. Had large room with 2 queen size beds.
Staff are excellent, very helpful, make your stay very relaxing.
Breakfast is great, cooked breakfast, cold meat and cheese board. Can not undertsand some of the negative comments made by other travellers. Ours was included in the city break, booked on Expedia. Number 22 bus just stops outside the hotel, takes you to the royal yacht Britannia nad shopping centre.
Highly recommended.

Fabulous hotel, great staff and service. Highly recommended. The Pompadour restaurant offers excellent quality of food with superbly knowledgeable staff (the wine waiter Peter deserves a special mention for his knowledge of wines and cheese, not to mention just being an all round lovely guy!). Buffet breakfast also fab with great choice of traditional cooked items and continental choices including various types of smoked fish and premier quality meats, french yoghurts, fresh fruits, pastries etc. I noticed that the kitchen also took orders for things such as poached eggs, porridge, etc, but this wasn't made clear by staff and perhaps should be? For us though the choice available was way more than enough so we were delighted with what was on offer. Our Queen Deluxe room was excellent, very comfortable and cosy. Bathrobes are super comfy, nespresso machine fantastic (though only 3 PODs?) Thoroughly recommend hotel, had a lovely time.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, or the "Caley" as it has become affectionately known among Edinburgh folk, was and still is the epitome of style and excellence. The large, rose-coloured Permian sandstone facade, quarried in Dumfries, dominates the skyline of the city's west end. The hotel has not only remained a focal point for more than one hundred years, but a symbol of the very best of Scottish hospitality. The Caley's pivotal position at the very heart of Edinburgh has always been its greatest asset. Created out of the 19th century railway boom, the five star hotel is looking to the future with confidence and pride in its ability to keep pace with the times. The hotel's reputation is as justified now as it was when the hotel first opened its doors in 1903. ... more   less
