I like the Filmhouse. Very laid back and homely and staff and customers are friendly.
The films are usually well chosen. And the bar/restaurant has a relaxed vibe: food and drink are reasonable in terms of quality and price.

Apart from the amazing and diverse selection of movies it is a great place to eat cheap good food, a wide selection for veggies as well. Plus being able to take in a fresh coffee or drink into the cinema whilst you watch. None of this over priced juice and sweets at this place.

The Film House is a friendly independent cinema, although not quite as art house or obscure as it seems to think it is. Still, in Edinburgh that scene just doesn't seem to exist, and it's a good option if you want to avoid the crowds and childen at the mainsteam cinemas.

The theatres here are superb - a huge screen for new releases, a more intimate space where they show other stuff.

The only downside really is the cafe/bar area. Where they could have put in a space where you'd want to spend a whole evening, meeting new friends who share an interest, it instead feels a lot like a student cafeteria. Handy place to meet up, not a great place to hang out.

excellent programme of films, esp at film festival time (but you MUST book). Cafe bar adequate in cheap and cheerful sense

The FIlmhouse has been a regular place to visit over several years and it never fails to provide. If you want to see the latest and best Arthouse and World Cinema movies this is the place to go. It also shows a few of the bigger hits of recent months and some Classics from the past. The screens vary from a couple of smaller ones to a larger one upstairs. All are sufficiently comfy places to enjoy your movie choice.

One of the benefits of the Filmhouse is the Cafe. There is a good range of quickly prepared meals that are both tasty and healthy. They have a good selection for those with special diets (Gluten, Vegan, Vegetarian). The beers, wine, soft drinks and snacks are also varied and give you a good selection of options. So it is great to go and have a meal or a drink even if you aren't going to see a movie.

There are a number of special events during the year, the Edinburgh Film Festival being the main one.

If there was one downside it would be that the Cafe is too busy. It can be very difficult to get a seat and it is always best to grab a table before ordering just in case.
