“Hidden Gem in New Town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2013

Although we were disappointed with the Edinburgh Castle, the visit to Georgian House more than made up for it. Located on a perfect Georgian Square, it was one of the highlights of the trip. It gives you an understanding of how the "upper class" lived in the era when UK was an empire....it gives you a history of the lives of the rich, and their servants, from the kitchen and wine room in the cellar to the dining and formal rooms of the owners. The staff (mostly volunteers) were extremely knowledgeable and engaging, full of interesting details about the property, and how the people lived their daily lives. The staff made is an extremely enjoyable learning experience. This should be visited with another house on the Royal Mile, which displays life in Edinburgh during the 16th and 17 centuries, and you will walk away with a great appreciation of what it was like to live, both rich and not so rich, before the time of electricity, indoor plumbing, telephones and all we now take for granted. A great visit...

“discover an 18th century townhouse”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2013

The house was built at the end of the 18th century and is decorated/furnished as for life in the house under its first owner, a landowner called John Lamont. An introductory visit gives you a background to the times, the people and the daily life of the house. A very well thought out scottish trust property. Very interesting and found the room volunteers both very friendly and very informative - thank you for making our visit so enjoyable.

“Back in time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 19, 2013

Very nice experience to travel back in time while walking through the house. At first you watch a short movie where they show a day in the 18th century in a noble house. After that you can walk through each room of the house like kitchen, drawing room, bedroom, dining room, etc. In each room somebody will answer your questions or you can read some information in different language. Great place and very friendly staff.

“worth a look”

Lovely house, lovely staff that were abviously very enthusiastic about their job and the house. It has a lovely collection of period furniture and is authentically laid out as it would have been originally.
