Owner description: St Giles’ Cathedral is the historic City Church of Edinburgh. With its famed crown spire it stands on the Royal Mile between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, it is the Mother Church of Presbyterianism and contains the Chapel of the Order of the Thistle (Scotland’s chivalric company of knights headed by the Queen). Please do not book any tours through TripAdvisor, as they are not endorsed by the cathedral.

“Be sure to visit the Chapel of the Thistle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2013

This is a magnificent cathedral and well worth visiting. Don't miss the Chapel of the Thistle, which has beautiful carvings. Look for the carving of the angel with bagpipes.

Only negative about the Cathedral is that there is a charge if you want to take photograpghs inside the Cathedral. It is only 2 GBP, but it seems quite tacky.

“Fabulous”

Some of the best stained glass window I have seen. The Thistle Chapel is very interesting with carvings and an interesting history. This is where knights can receive the Order of the Thistle from the reigning monarch.

“Worth a look”

Beautiful cathedral . Interesting architecture, arches and buttresses. They do collect a 2 pound fee to take pictures.

“Lovely stained glass”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 20, 2013

The church itself is old, but not as spectacular as others that we've visited. The one differentiator was the beautiful stained glass, with huge scenes across many different panels. Also the lighted crown spire was unique and beautiful. Love that is free, even if they do ask for a donation in order to take pictures.

“Free entry”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2013

The cathedral offers free entry with a suggested donation of £5 but once inside and you get to the thistle chapel they ask for a further £2.

You can also get a photo permit and that costs more but I don't feel that photos should be allowed if others wants to worship.
