The Scottish jewels, the cannons, the views are all wonderful and worth the price of admission. But the best selling point of Edinburgh Castle is the very clear explanation of Scottish history depicted on the walls in a long continuous mural as you walk through the hallways of the tour and stop to see the lifelike depictions along the way. You can, of course, purchase an audio guide, but the murals are clearly notated and there is also additional information given on placards at each historical depiction’s stopping point. By the time you leave, if you are a reader, you will have a relatively clear grasp of Scottish royal history from the first king to the last and including Mary, Queen of Scots. Additionally the information on the outside of the castle will help you orient yourself to the city and the location of the other historical sites.

We did the audio guide for our walk through. It’s great to learn about the history of Scotland and so much is learned from this castle. I think it’s a no brained that you must go and see history.

Was a great venue for a business event. Good rooms and refreshments. Directions were very good with good interaction from staff.
Would recommend this for future events

Very touristy as in its a very attractive area for tourists. Once inside the castle the views are lovely especially if you get the sun set.

Gift shop is very expensive though

The castle dominates the skyline of Edinburgh (perhaps with the exception of Arthur's seat), and offers impressive panoramic views across the city and the firth of forth and into the Highlands. Whilst the entry price was certainly reasonable, we felt the lack of 'castle' and explanation of its history meant we did not get the best experience (probably down to the fact that we are both history graduates and therefore biased ;) ). Would make a great afternoon for anyone visiting, however - but would probably be even more impressive in the summer!
