Owner description: Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

Of course we visited the castle when we were in Edinburgh! It looms over the whole town so one feels compelled to check it out. The place was very interesting, however, it was really crowded and this really took away from our appreciation of the place. We particularly enjoyed the prisoners of war display and the visit by Mary, Queen of Scotts in the Great Hall.

We had booked to go to the castle before we visited Edinburgh and was looking forward to this visit, however we were a little let down.

The views are stunning from the summit alright and is a great place to take photographs, however the lack of guidance and mapping of locations in the castle was poor - it seemed to be very random and a bit all over the place. The Tower of London was a much better experience for me!

This is a must if you visit Edinburgh. We spent a few hours there with a local tour guide. It was very windy, but luckily it was sunny and not too cold. Many attractions there. Saint Margaret's Chapel is a wonder. Why did they build such a small chapel?
The new and old buildings blended very well.

Brilliant mini break. The castle is spectacular. Highly recommend the open top bus trips. We did 4 of the 5 and ran out of time. Can't wait to go back to this beautiful city.

Second visit to the Castle. We were lucky to join a castle tour guide who gave a lovely walking talk about the Castle history and specific areas of the Castle complex including recommendations as to what not to miss. His stories were entertaining and informative - much enjoyed. Love the dog cemetery and the panoramic views of Edinburgh - Old and New towns. Don't miss St. Margaret's Chapel. A very lovely little chapel retreat amongst the bustle of the Castle crowds. We also were entertained by an interview with Mary Queen of Scots. Great fun.
