We took a taxi from our hotel to the castle. As we were quite early there were no queues and we purchased our tickets cost £12 for Senior Entrance. There is a meeting point just past the entrance where free guided tours are avialable, lasting half an hour. We took advantage of this and it was an opportunity to learn many histrorical facts and get a general overview of the castle. Our guide was very knowlegable and had a good sense of humour. We saw the One o'clock Gun and Mons Meg - with stories about these. We then continued walking and stopping in areas being given explanations/historical facts as we went along. Once the tour was finished we decided to visit the Great Hall, the Scottish National War Memorial, the Crown Jewels and the Stone of Destiny, St Margaret's Chapel and the Prisons. The views over the city are wonderful.

It was a hot and sunny day so after our visit we sat down for a drink and then made our way down the Royal Mile to Holyrood Palace - slowly.

Definitely recommend.

The castle is a superb venue to spend an afternoon with varied historical attractions. There is also a nice tea room if you are a little tired from all the walking & climbing. I

If you visit Edinburgh you just can't miss the castle. In the middle of old town this huge castle tells the city history. Wear comfortable shoes as it is on the top of a hill. The view Is amazing, there are museums inside of it so takes a day to enjoy it.

I really enjoyed going to this castle. There was a lot more to see than there is at Sterling Castle. They were having a celebration the day we went because it was the Queen's birthday. Overall, a fun spot to go. It takes a full morning or afternoon. I would go early before the crowds.
