Owner description: Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

Dominating the Edinburgh landscape, the imposing rock face helps add to the history, glory and mystique of the Edinburgh castle. One can not help but imagine what would have gone through the minds of those who would hope to "storm" this castle. If you plan to visit the castle itself, buy your tickets ahead of time. You may only need an hour or two to see the castle. The crown jewels are worth seeing and there is a great view of the surrounding city from the ramparts. The rest does not take that long (think artifacts from old castles). I actually preferred looking up at to the castle though

The Castle had a great tour guide that told us about the history of the castle. You could see a great view of the city.

I really enjoyed the trip to Edinburgh Caste. It is a castle that goes back 600 years. We did have to queue, and it rained during the queue. But well worth it. It was as if it belonged back over 600 years ago. And it was set on a height, which we could see right from the hotel. An absolute must see if you go to Edinburgh.

Way over priced paid 16 pounds and 3.5 for the audio which didn't tell us anythingmabout the castle at all, hardly get to see any of it and I swear it's all new and rebuilt anyway its more a very small boring museum.

It's interesting to read negative reviews of Edinburgh Castle, as our recent experience was very different. Perhaps it was because we bought our tickets on-line and brought them with us. Perhaps it is because we went two hours before it closed and were coming in as lots of the crowds were coming out. Perhaps it is because we weren't expecting a castle in the sense of a place people lived but instead a fort with a very long and rich history. So ... plan in advance and time your visit to avoid the big crowds and know what you're going to see. The old prisoner cells are fascinating, the war memorial is absolutely amazing and very moving, and the great hall is a wondrous place that reminded me of the great hall in the Harry Potter movies. Oh, yes, and the views ... wow! For the record, the crown jewels aren't particularly "wowing" and definitely aren't the reason for a visit.
