Owner description: Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

“A lot to see”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

There is a lot to see here, so make sure you provide at least half a day. The vistas of the city are great, as are the displays on various elements of Scottish history--military and otherwise. It is a top crowd draw in the city though, so better to go on weekdays if you can.

“Definitely worth a visit”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

The Edinburgh Castle is one of the highlights of a visit to Edinburgh. There are regular tours led by tour guides that start at the battery area to the right, just past the gate after you pay and enter the castle. The guides are wealth of information and will answer all of your questions. You can also rent audio guides, which are good for those who aren't comfortable with English.

The castle buildings are well kept and the history is interesting too. Be aware of the 1pm cannon shot which is done daily, M-Sat. If you are lucky, you'll see and hear some bagpipers too.

You can easily spend several hours at the castle and it is worth a visit, rain or shine. It can be chilly (even in June), so wear layers and bring a rain jacket.

“You just have to do the Castle”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

We visited during half-term, and I have to say, that despite this it wasn't too busy, must have something to do with the arctic weather. As a wheelchair user, you might think that much of the castle is inaccessable, but you would be wrong. This is mostly down to the staff, as they are more than helpful getting you in and out of places, and since we last visted the castle 20 years ago, much has been done to ensure this. There is so much to learn, and even if history is not your thing, I promise you will become engrossed by the rich history of this place, go see.

“A must do!”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

We visited Edinburgh castle at 10am on a Sunday. We bought our tickets on the day and the ticket kiosk and waited only a few minutes to be served.

I really loved visiting the castle, there are lots to see and exhibitions to visit. Sadly we were driving home on the Sunday at midday so we had to rush around but still really enjoyed it.

Beautiful views over the city too!
