Owner description: Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

This must be one of the best castles in the UK. What a stunning place. Full of history and so interesting. The signage is easy to follow so you can wander around on your own or there are regular guided tours, included in the entrance fee, which are very well done and extremely interesting and insightful. The views of Edinburgh are beautiful (we had a lovely clear day), and you can see for miles in all directions. Allow 3 to 4 hours for your visit. Highly recommended.

“Must see in Edinburgh, but only if you like history”
Reviewed February 21, 2013

This is a must see in Edinburgh, along with the Holyrood Palace and The Royal Yacht Britannia. If you only have time for one of the three, Edinburgh Castle is probably it. It's not cheap, and you'll need to spend at least half a day there as there's loads to see and listen (via the audio guide, which is included in the price of the tour). There's also scheduled tours by the staff, which seem pretty good. There's a cafe which is always packed but serves a decent meal. I would highly recommend this to history buffs, but if you don't appreciate history then this is not for you.

“Not for young kids”
Reviewed February 21, 2013

Was a little over priced, particularly if you have younger children (as there is little to keep their interest). The views are fantastic and if you are a couple or travelling with older children with an interest in history, you could send many hours here. The guides were very knowledgeable and did their best to bring some of the rooms and history to life. I don't think a visit to Edinburgh would be complete without a visit but there are better attractions for families.

Could you visit Edinburgh without a visit to the Castle. The usual tourist push and shove, but you will regret not going if you have visited Edinburgh and seen how the Castle dominates the City.
