Owner description: Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

Of the many castles in Scotland I have visited, I can say this was one of my least favourite. Obviously coming when Hogmanay was going on was a mistake but it was so crowded. So much to see though and a lot of history. If you love Scottish history it is a great place to visit, but don't come Dec-Jan or June-Aug, if you don't like crowds. Beware, if you are not in great shape or have trouble walking, take a cab to the castle because it is a decent walk up a steep slope to get to the castle from the centre.

Edinburgh Castle was by far the best attraction i visted on my short stay in Edinburgh. I always enjoy visiting castles but most as just a walk around and dont have much to see.

However Edinburgh castle was avery differnt. We were shown around my a member of the staff who was very funny and kept the group very enterained whilst also giving a glimpse of the history behind the great city and also the castle.

Its a fabulous day out, especially if you are their to see the 1 o'clock gun being fired. I belive its fired everyday except sundays.

You will not be let down by this place with many rooms to look inside and take your interest i.e old prisons, war musuem and much more!

If not interested in any of the above i'd still say it was worth a vist just to see the views of the city from the castle!

Spent nearly 4 hours here. The tour guide was interesting and we then walked around the entire castle. Loved the history behind the castle and of Scotland. If your time is limited visit the castle over Holyrood Palace.

It was a clear and freezing cold day and a bit much for our Aussie friends who had just come from 40 degrees. Edinburgh castle is not a flash and fancy castle but a robust icon of Scottish heritage. The cafe is expensive as these places are but it was good food and service. The hand held is worth the price and the guide was very entertaining. Wonderfull for holiday snaps overlooking the city too. Don't expect a lot and you will enjoy the visit. Could be difficult for people with mobility problems.

Hubby, myself, a 9mo baby and a 9yo boy all decided to see the Edinburgh castle on Jan.2, 2013. Husband is Scottish and had been on this castle before and I'm a history buff who likes to read about places like this. In one word, I'll sum this visit here as IMPRESSIVE. The structures were well preserved and the castle itself was a sight to see. Loved seeing the canons, the itsy bitsy chapel, the honours and the little bit of history you pick up from voice overs and explanations on wall. My boy was so impressed to see the huge sword and read some of the stories of the kings and queens who lived there. A forewarning to families with kids, if you have a pram, you will have a hard time on some areas as you will need to carry your child due to the stairs. Other than that, I strongly suggest a visit to this castle for everybody.
