Owner description: Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

The castle is an awesome view in the heart of Edinburgh. It was interesting to see the crowned jewels and learn a bit about the history of Scotland. We took the free tour and learned much more than we would have just by walking around. As far as castles go, it was pretty average if you've visited a lot of castles in Europe and kind of spendy to get in.

I had been to Edinburgh Castle a couple of times, but now as we are members of Scottish Heritage, we went again for free!

It it a great place just to spend the afternoon milling about enjoying the ambience. If it's good weather you'll get fantastic views out across Edinburgh and beyond - fantastic! Or if you want, spend longer and learn all about Scotland's rich political and royal history.

I can't wait to go back so I can spend more time reading all the information that is put up and to join one of the free walking tours.

I would definitely recommend, even though it is quite expensive to get in. The coffee shop is quite overpriced though, but I think this is to be expected.

Fantastic to see such a historic site. Tour was excellent and informed us of the history prior to us wandering around after it concluded.

I never get tired of this view, whether from Calton Hill, Princes Street or the North Bridge. It appears as if it was just carved out of the volcanic rock and that just keeps me amazed...
