Owner description: Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

A slightly rainy day, so the inside presentations were consumed at a slower pace. The head set audio extra cost is well worth the few pounds. Every area was well explained with addionaln details by pressing a few buttons.

Amazing history of England and Scotland. Found an ancestors name for a later research. Royal crowns, Great Hall, Military museum, dungeons, all so well done. Even with loads of people in the place, we were not pushed or over run. Again the audio was such a nice tool.

Got to love it. Lots of washrooms and a whiskey tasting area.

Thank BW T

A good place to know Scottish history. The highest place to see the whole city. Inside the castle, there are types of spots.

You can see the castle for everywhere in the city but you would never see what inside without venturing into it. I spent about 3 hours inside the castle and enjoyed all of it. They have the Scottish crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny that all the British Monarchs have been crowned on for the past 700 years. I also watched a demonstration by two actors of muskets and pikes that was both informational and entertaining. Also if you happen to be there around 1pm make sure to find a spot to watch them shoot the daily cannon and get a photo with the giant blank.

Having lived in Edinburgh all my life, the castle is one of the things I take completely for granted. I was lucky enough to recently win tickets to a behind -the-scenes tour of the castle and I'm so glad that I did!

Our tour was taken by Colin, who I cannot recommend enough! He was funny, knowledgeable and told us plenty of extra stories about the history of the castle and the architecture. It was great to learn about the castle from the view of someone who has seen it change and develop for over 20 years and much more interesting than listening to the audio tape!

There is a huge wealth of things to do and see, our tour lasted 2 hours but we stayed an extra hour and a half to see everything!

I recommend a visit, and particularly a tour with Colin!

Stumbles upon this by accident at first (don't know how) as it sits at the too of the city in view for all to see! First thought it was quite expensive to go in but well worth it! You can spend hours wandering around and amazing photography opportunity. It is a must !! Just use the sugar in the cafe with caution unless you like your coffee SWEET :-)
