Description: Having opened on the Royal Mile in 2010, Angels with Bagpipes has quickly established itself as one of the best Scottish restaurants in Edinburgh. Mixing an atmospheric Old Town setting with chic, contemporary looks, Angels with Bagpipes was designed to fit perfectly into its Royal Mile setting. Pride in fresh, seasonal, Scottish ingredients is what defines Angels with Bagpipes and makes us one of the top Scottish restaurants in Edinburgh. Open through the day and evening , we are the perfect spot for a quick lunch or a relaxing dinner.

Went early on a Friday night and really did not enjoy the experience. There was absolutely no atmosphere and we felt that we were hustled out of the restaurant by 7pm even although there was no customers waiting on our table and there were quite a few empty tables (we had a show booked for 7.30pm se we were keen to leave anyway) The service was slow as we waited ages between courses. The food was ok but very small portions and overpriced. 4 of us dined there and we were all hungry two hours later. We will definitely not be back to this restaurant.

Stumbled across this restaurant by accident, but what a find! Smoked trout pâté to start which was excellent. Slow braised beef and fish for main, thoroughly enjoyed. Loved so much we had to force down dessert on pure principal that we knew how good it would be so a cheese board and a crime brûlée with green apple sorbet later we woddled out. Also some lovely wines by the glass. High light of my trip to edinburgh!

We ate here based on the good reviews and photos of the restaurant which suggest a romantic candlelit environment. However, we didn't find this to be the case; the decor was rather bland and there wasn't much atmosphere. We aren't particularly fussy people but what we do like a nice romantic ambience!

My husband and I were seated at a cramped table in the downstairs room, with a draft coming from a nearby corridor. The food was nice - my husband had the haggis to start followed by the steak, which he said was very good and I had the chicken, which was ok. I wasn't drinking but they made a lovely non-alcholic cocktail which wasn't on the menu. The service was attentive but probably lacking a bit of warmth.

Having eaten at the Witchery a couple of times we would definitely recommend it over this restaurant if you are looking for something a bit special near the Royal Mile. Overall, a nice meal but let down by the setting.

Let me preface this review by pointing out that we went for the set menu offer, as a pre-theatre meal.

The meal was fairly good value, but the flavours of many of the courses seemed a bit confused, and some of the textures didn't quite work together.

The salmon starter was pleasant in terms of taste, but the slimy texture didn't help it to go down easily. My girlfriend had the duck breast starter, which was accompanied by some kind of rich pate, which was a bit heavy for the first course. We both had pork belly for main, which was reasonable, but the highlight was my fig tart for dessert - sweet, yet light.

Would probably recommend to a friend, as the deal is good value, but I wouldn't go as far as to say it was a brilliant dining experience.

Went for a meal here just after the New Year on a Tuesday. Unsurprisingly it was rather quiet given the time of year and day of the week. This suited us as we were able to talk. Hadn't been before and we were very happy with our experience. The interior is beautifully decorated - cosy, but understated and modern with those quirky angel candlesticks. The food (modern Scottish) was of excellent quality, beautifully presented, and it made a very good impression on our visitor from California. Excellent scallops with black pudding, venison and deconstructed Cranachan. The service was friendly and attentive - but not intrusive. And the price very reasonable given the high standard of the food (around £40 pp including wine - we have paid a lot more in Edinburgh for what were really rather mediocre meals). I strongly recommend it and we will certainly go back ourselves.
