We had booked a table for brunch before the Scotland v Wales rugby match. It was really busy but the staff were attentive and prompt - the drinks were delivered through a hatch in our booth which opened onto the bar. Our table had reserved signs on it for 5.30 and 7.30 so we asked if we could book for 7.30 and they had a table. We arrived back at 7.30 to find the place full to the rafters and could not believe that they had kept us a table - in a booth again and the same waitress welcomed us back. The dinner was as tasty as the brunch. We asked the waitress for suggestions on pudding and she suggested their signature "mess" which was truly scrummy. I would recommend this bar but if you know it is going to be busy then book a table - unless you enjoy drinking in a scrum! Live music was also good. My only criticism was that by 9.30 the ladies toilets were a mess as clearly no-one checks them through the evening and with no bins in them there was rubbish everywhere including broken glass.

Thank you for a fantastic review. It sounds like you really got to experience our Rugby atmosphere. We have also passed on your feedback to our team to review closely on future rugby days.

My husband and I stumbled upon Ghillie Dhu after dinner one evening. From the looks of the outside, we thought it might be a gimmicky tourist place. However, not so! The bar was filled with suit and ties enjoying a post work beer. The selection of beer was good and the bartender was very friendly and helpful. The staff kilts and the exposed wood beams gave us the Scottish feel that we, as tourists, enjoy. Live music began around 9:30pm and there was good energy in the pub.

I would hate to be here if it was busy, if this is the standard of service for dinner on a quiet Wednesday evening. Even although there were no patrons waiting at the bar to be served, it took them over 15 minutes to get our drinks after we ordered with our food (disappointingly there were no cocktails). The food itself took nearly an hour to arrive. I was actually on the point of paying for the one drink we had and walking out when the waitress came to the table apologising for the delay and offering us another drink saying both rounds would be free. So we stayed. To be fair the food was tasty although only lukewarm. Puddings were lovely and arrived in a much better time frame!
Although the bar and kitchen seem to be slow, the table staff were friendly and the general ambience was good. I would hesitate to rush back however, and if you were going to an event after eating I'd avoid the place or be prepared to be late especially if it is at the weekend!!

Came here for hen night. 16 of us had fun with cocktail making which was good value and great fun. Then onto dinner and what a let down. 3 choices each course and not one of us had a good dining experience. Paid £22.50 each which seemed good value but...... Starter of mackerel was ok, the butternut squash soup tasted like tomato..chicken with haggis - chicken was tasty but pots cold and gravy tasteless. The veggie risotto. Looked awful and was beyond tasteless. The ghillie dhu recognised this and didn't charge for the risottos. Cranachan was a bit of shortbread with a hard blob of cream on top with 4 raspberries. Certainly not cranachan and tasteless. We also got couple bottles free wine and some fries but overall a poor experience and would not eat here again

This is a popular meeting point for people heading to or from rugby matches at Murrayfield.
As such, you'd expect them to have additional staff on duty for those hours to meet bar and kitchen demands. We found bar service slow, although not horrific, and food service also slow.

In saying that, the food when it arrived was piping hot and very generous portion size. Lunchtime deal of main course and pint of lager for £10 was good value.

Would certainly go back, but allow for more time to eat due to slower service.
Beautiful building, and a great location for city centre access.
