“Unusual but very tasty food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2010

We visited Hot Hot Chinese after reading the review on tripadvisor & weren't disappointed. Really tasty broths with many unusual ingredients you cook yourself. Very different to a standard Chinese restaurant here in the UK but we thoroughly enjoyed it. We plan to go back when next in Edinburgh!
Just a point to note though, they only accept cash for payments.

“Real Chinese Food - a little slice of China in Edinburgh”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 17, 2010

This little known restaurant in Home Street has been hailed as one of the most fun eating places in Edinburgh at the time of writing.

We wanted to grab an early dinner whilst on Holiday in Edinburgh and went there at 04:15pm and found the restaurant still closed. The lady in the next door shop told us that the restaurant opens at 05:00pm so we went up and down home street and into the meadows to while away the time..

At 05:05pm we went in and the restaurant was already half full. By 05:15pm the restaurant was full chock-a-block. I considered this to be a good sign. One of the other things we noticed was that we were the only Caucasian table eating at this restaurant. Everyone else was Asian. A Chinese restaurant frequented by the Chinese is definitely a good sign for authenticity.

The restaurant lists only one dish, and everyone here has come specifically for it. This restaurant specialises in hot pot. (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tI6M7NJbaZ4 to get an idea). You get an electric hot pot in the middle of the table, with two choices of broth boiling away. All the food comes to the table uncooked, and the waitress explains how this is all done. Most food is dropped in one of the broths for two minutes and it cooks. You dip it in a sauce (for me the satay was best) and eat it. If you like something and it finishes, you can ask for more. We did and we were not charged extra for the extra things we got. Before she starts bringing the food, the waitress asks if there is anything in the menu that you do not like. The only thing we gave a miss was tripe. We had so many interesting things on the table - giant prawns, fish balls, different kinds of tofu, seaweed and other Chinese vegetables, Chinese mushrooms, chicken, beef, pork and lamb, rice noodles, wheat noodles, and a thick flat type of noodles I had never tasted before, and some other nice things I cant remember the name of .

The décor of the restaurant is deceiving, being mostly white, with cheap chairs and tables, but the food more than makes up for it - if you are in the mood for authentic Chinese , rather than the sweet and sour and black bean sauces you find in the westernised Chinese restaurants.

For all that food, the price was incredible value for money. Children under 7 eat for free and between 7 and 12 is only half price. And the experience, one of a kind. Loved it. :)
