“Lumpy bed”
Reviewed September 18, 2012

We drove past and saw what looked like a cute B&B and decided to stay as we could park right outside. Parking in Edinburgh not easy lol. We couldn't find anyone to book in, finally found a lady who was serving behind the bar, she apologised, short of staff that day. She was very nice and gave us a reasonably priced room for the night including breakfast. The room was clean, but the bed was so very uncomfortable (Room 1). Everytime you moved the springs sprung!!! Please get a new mattress for this room, seriously. Their was a view outside of a very messy roof top, wouldn't take much to sweep it out and put a couple of nice pot plants out their, would make a world of difference, and some curtains that fit the window. Breakfast was served by a man who cooked the meal, no choice given, just cereal or full cooked. We left in the morning no one was there to say goodbye. There was no friendly personal service here, perhaps they needed some more staff. A very ordinary place.

Room Tip: Make sure to sit on the bed before taking the room

We stayed at the Ellwyn for 3 nights, we had booked a double room with a travel cot and on arrival they had given us a family room. It was bright and spacious (could have been a bit more modern with decor etc) but it had everything we could have required. Clean, bright and spacious. They gave us a travel cot but were able just to put the little one into a bed of his own. Plenty tea / coffee etc which was replenished daily, very helpful, cheery staff and a huge breakfast that kept us going all day. Very reasonable priced and well worth the money. Would definately stay again

I am a frequent visitor to Edinburgh and I always stay at the Ellwyn Hotel. It is a small cosy hotel, with a relaxed and informal atmosphere. The staff are fantastic - nothing is too much trouble and the home cooked breakfast is always tasty and very generous. I have always been made to feel very welcome by the staff at the Ellwyn.
The hotel is situated in a quiet residential area, just a short walk from Portobello Beach. It is also on a main bus route and is served by frequent buses direct into Edinburgh City centre. The Ellwyn has a bar/restaurant and a conservatory dining area, where guests may enjoy lunch and evening meals. The menu is traditional and the food is wholesome, delicious and reasonably priced. There is also a weekly Jazz Club, which is always popular with the local residents of Portobello.
The rooms are large, furnished with everything you could need, including hospitality tray and have ensuite bathrooms.
To summarise, the Ellwyn is clean, comfortable and friendly and an excellent base. I have always enjoyed my stay there and think the hotel represents good value for money.
