We stayed three nights for the Edinburgh Fringe. Excellent, spacious, comfortable room. Great breakfast. Walking distance to centre. Handy corner shop nearby. I would definitely stay again. John very helpful, friendly and professional.

We stayed at McCraes for a weekendtrip to Edinburgh. John gave us a warm welcome and we felt welcome during the hole weekend. The breakfast was excellent whatever we had chosen. The room is spacey and the bathroom aswell. The bed was very comfortable for us and we liked the extra travelinformation.
The Street is quiet and tidy and there are restaurants and pubs nearby. The citycenter is in walking distance therefor we never took the bus.
Planning the next trip to Edinburgh means staying at Mc Craes for us.

Stayed at McRae's for one night at the start of the Fringe Festival. Very nice and comfortable rooms. Great breakfast and books selection. A great place to enjoy a quiet night, while still being within walking distance to all the city's sights and places.

We stayed here when we went up to visit for the Edinburgh Fringe, and we had such a good experience! Walking in to our rooms, our first impression was that our triple room was large, clean, and welcoming. And the owner was so helpful with everything that we needed. There is a Tesco close by, and somewhere close by that we did our laundry - both of which he handily pointed out to us. We walked into the city every day, there is a street close by that had plenty of great restaurants, cafe's and pubs, and the area was really nice, we always felt safe. Best of all, it was quiet - we've stayed at some such noisy places, it was really nice to stay somewhere there were no disturbances! We never ate the breakfast there but the house always smelt amazing.

I wish we had been able to stay longer!

Stayed here for a long weekend with a friend. Was greeted with a warm welcome and instantly felt comfortable. The room was lovely and light with a big ensuite bathroom. The beds were fantastic, best nights sleep I've had for a while! Great selection of food for breakfast be it cooked or not. Will definitely be staying here again!

For my money, the best places to stay while traveling are the ones that give you a taste of how people actually live day to day in the place you're visiting. For a few fleeting nights, the right accomodation will transport you, making you feel like a temporary citizen.

McCrae's is that kind of place. It's close to everything you'll want to see in Edinburgh, but just outside of the fray. After a long day of exploring, you'll retire to a quiet comfortable home in a real neighborhood, just as if you lived and worked in Edinburgh. Your commute is a pleasant 15 minute walk from the heart of the Old Town. Along the way, you'll find countless local restaurants and shops; places real residents of Edinburgh eat at and shop in.

Your host John is friendly, laid back, and very knowledgeable about Edinburgh in general. He has great tips on where to eat and what to see and do. He also cooks a terrfic breakfast. His haggis is a must. (Do not be scared by the weird pictures of haggis...it's basically a finely ground meat and grain hash with a wonderful peppery, nutty flavor, and it is not generally served inside a creepy ball of skin).

John has also mastered a skill only found in the best B&B hosts...he's magically there when you have a question, need something, or just want to chat, but completely invisible when you don't.

The B&B itself is a tastefully appointed Georgian townhouse. The decor is timelessly Scottish. No dowdy pink floral duvets or lace doilies here. Our high celiinged front room on the right was large, clean, and comfortable, with a nice tall window, a good hot shower and a big firm bed. At night, despite being on the ground floor, facing the street, our room was exceptionally quiet. We slept better at McCrae's than we had in the middle of the Yorkshire Dales!

The old school 4:3 format TV in the room is a bit small by modern LCD standards, but you'll probably be too tired from walking Edinburgh's hilly streets to watch much TV anyhow. There is WiFi, but at the time of our stay, reception in the room was spotty at best. John is aware of this and is working on it. (one word my friend...repeaters!)

There are fancier places to stay in Edinburgh, and you'll pay for them. But even a penthouse suite at the Balmoral can't touch McCrae's for an immersive life-in-Edinburgh experience. We were sad to leave Edinburgh, but glad we found McCrae's.

Thank you for such a kind review, plus the helpful remarks on things that could be improved - a wi-fi repeater has now been installed, which should take care of the unreliable connections some guests were experiencing.

John

I guess it's not really new town, probably a few hundred yards from the edge of new town proper, but we stayed there (4 of us - 2 adults, 2 little boys) and were impressed enough to come here and write this review!

Friendly, clean, cosy, warm, light, good food - even with our finicky diet!, quiet. Liked it a lot

Room Tip: Rooms 2 and 3 are at the back, ground floor - both lovely, light, clean, quiet, well-fitted out
