In Sylvesters we found fabulous Scottish fare in a charming and quietly elegant setting near Edinburgh University - all at a reasonable price, which was perfect for our large group of 8. The decor was warm and unique - a throw at the window corner seats to keep warm, and sand timers for brewing the perfect cup of tea. Our dinner was fantastic from starters to desserts. I had the Maple Gressingham duck breast, which was appetizingly served with colourful beet root and sweet potatoes. The meat was moist and juicy - perfectly cooked, where I usually have to struggle with the texture of duck. My son recommends the gourmet jerk pork burger! The service was fantastic for us, being such a large group. We will definitely be back. Top marks for the food, service, and atmosphere.

Great lunch here today. My chicken laksa was rich, aromatic, had the perfect chilli heat and above all the portion size was substantial. The menu had a small but well chosen range of options including caesar salad, jerk pork burger, soups, sandwiches and feta tart. The staff were genuinely welcoming and having visited with my baby, nothing seemed to be too much trouble for them. The atmosphere was smart bistro and our family group felt at home amongst the lunch time mix of academics, workers and groups of friends. A great option if you're in this area of Edinburgh.

Managed an early dinner before a fringe outing at Sylvesters and was impressed when we entered the restaurant. Nicely decorated without being overdone and a nice friendly welcome. Possibly a little cramped but cosy feel overall. As pressed for time we both had the spicy pork burger which was pretty tasteless along with a nice Shiraz which was in line with Edinburgh prices. The menu in my opinion was limiting but don't know if it's a cut down menu for the festival. As Sylvester's hasn't been open too long I'll wait a few months and see if things settle down. Tough local competition in their area so they may have to up their game after the festival.

We were looking for somewhere to dine early evening after visiting the Fringe and came acroos Sylvesters. They were fairly heavily booked but did offer us a table near the door, but with a window view (later visitors were refused service - fully booked! - we were lucky in arriving just before). The service was very friendly. We ordered a bottle of Malbec which was reasonably priced & enjoyable. We both had the Haggis starters which were quite small but very tasty, followed by Sausage & onion mash and a Chicken Laska which had an Oriental blend of spices and again was very tasty indeed. I finished with their Sticky-toffee pudding - full marks!
We were somewhat early for our evening show so had Coffees & Courvorsier cognacs (reasonably priced) to pass some time away - there was no pressure on us to leave, despite them being fully booked.
A very pleasant discovery, would we return... most certainly, but probably advisable to pre-book in advance!
