“Pub is great, restaurant is OK”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 10, 2013

I came two time in this place in the same week, one for lunch that we had in the pub with my wife and children, one in the restaurant in the evening because they did not accept the kids in the pub ! The lunch in the pub was simple but great, the burgers are worth to note and the beer is excellent. The restaurant was a little disapointing and more expensive than the pub. It was more italian than scottish. My kids ordered lasagna from the menu of the pub and we had to pay the price of the restaurant ! The waiter was very kind and warm and helped us have a nice time in the restaurant. In conclusion I would surely recommend the pub, the restaurant is OK.

“Outstanding food and service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

We arrived, without reservations, about 7.30 on a Saturday evening. The restaurant was busy but they managed to give us a table for two. The welcome and service were excellent. Mixed olives and water appeared immediately. As starters we choose a half portion of Lobster Ravioli and a Mille feuille of smoked salmon with avocado and tomato. Both were generous portions and very tasty. We choose Seafood Spaghetti and a Rib-eye steak with a Diane sauce (blue cheese and peppercorn available). I've eaten seafood spaghetti all over the world and this was up there with the best. Loads of mussels and clams with king prawns and squid. My partner said his steak was fabulous, one of the best he has had. The wine list is very reasonably priced and we had a very nice red. The whole bill was £60. Great value for money and a very enjoyable evening.

“Hidden Restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2013

Having grown up in Edinburgh and walked past the Old Bell Pub many times without going in, a friend introduced me to the New Bell Restaurant upstairs. Early on a Sunday evening it was very quiet but we were early enough for the (daily) early bird menu and had three courses for £12 - certainly a bargain considering the quality. Starter: fresh baby tomato bruschetta. Main: very nicely done roasted salmon and potatoes. Couldn't make my mind up about the dessert and they very obligingly gave me a split one of strega panna cotta (excellent) and tira misu (good). Good bottle of Multipulciano and also tried the aged grappa which was very good. The room is attractively laid out and the staff friendly: apparently the current owner/chef only took over a few months ago. Will go again when I'm next back in Edinburgh.

“Superb food, great atmosphere, lovely staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 10, 2012

On a long weekend break in Edinburgh, the owner of our hotel recommended The New Bell Restaurant and I'm so glad he did! We enjoyed a delicious meal with excellent wine served by friendly, helpful and ultra-professional staff. Highly recommended whether you are looking for a nice quiet 1:1 meal or a family celebration. Excellent value for money too!
