The Free Day Tour was very good. It covered the Royal Mile and surrounding area. The idea with the SANDEMANS tours are that you pay what you thought the tour was worth at the end of the tour. The tour guides work freelance and only receive what people pay at the end of the tour.
However, the Castle Tour was actually a waste of money. It cost us £28.00 on the day. We were told by the tour rep that we would avoid 1.5 hour queues if we did the Sandemans New Europe tour. However, when we got to the castle we found that there were no queues and that we could have walked in quite easily. The cost of entry at the gate was £16.00. We could also have rented an audio guide at a cost of £3.50 from the castle and this would have done the job for us in terms of a guided tour, as we had done the Sandemans New Europe Free Edinburgh Tour previously. We found that much of the Edinburgh Castle tour was a repeat of what we saw and learned on the Free Tour. We also found that the tour started too late in the day, and thus didn't have enough time to explore the castle, once the tour was completed. Thus, we were somewhat disappointed with the Edinburgh Castle Tour, and could have saved around £20.00 if we had opted to go to the castle independently and used the castle's own audio guides..
