Because of my own inept booking of my trip, I showed up in Edinburgh on a Saturday afternoon with no place to stay. It all worked out for the best though, when I was able to walk in to the Apex Waterloo and get one of the last remaining rooms. The wonderful Sylwia checked me in, handed me a map and helped me get my bearings, and gave me a £10 pound voucher to use for dining or at the lovely-looking hotel bar. The room was quiet, spacious, newly furnished, and spotless. The coffee, tea and biscuits were a nice touch, as were the toiletries by Elemis. I had room service later that night - the food was really nice and actually very reasonably priced! Bit of a queue for breakfast in the morning, but I was seated fairly quickly and the staff were all lovely. Be sure to try the tattie scones at breakfast! Checkout was a breeze, thanks again to Sylwia. The location is perfect, too - very close to Waverley Rail Station and Princes Street, it's perfectly situated to get to all of Edinburgh's main attractions.

Only faults with the room was the poor shower head and slight lack in water temperature.

Breakfast was the true disappointment of our stay, the seemingly hung over impersonal, clumsy gentleman that showed us to our table seemed flustered and stressed (constant clicking of his pen) unable to make eye contact, or sound genuine whilst trying to work out his role in the dining room. The food was not much better, the 'fresh ' orange juice was supplied shamelessly in cartons straight from the supermarket. The request for brown toast resulted in two pieces of barely warm limp white bread.

Being Valentines I brought a bottle of champagne, so called reception asking if they could supply and ice bucket and a couple of glasses, after over an hour of waiting we gave up and went out. Disappointing!

This could be a lovely hotel, with some attention to staff training.

I stayed at this hotel for one night on business, and it has become my new firm favourite place to stay in the capital. Ideally situated at the start of Princes Street, the main shopping and tourist area of Edinburgh, it is also just a few minutes walk from Waverley train station and 10 minutes from the main bus station.

Check in was quick, efficient and pleasant; the staff were chatty, friendly and happy to help. I was allocated an accessible room as per my request due to my mobility limitations, and was pleasantly surprised at the size of the bathroom, which contained a huge walk in shower as well as a standard sized bath, sink and WC. Toiletries were all by Elemis; great quality and very pretty packaging.

I had requested a double bed and my room was a twin; however one phone call resulted in a member of staff arriving at my door almost immediately to convert the twin to a double, which he did very efficiently in less than 2 minutes! It was probably the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in, with huge, deep pillows and a thick duvet, and I got a briliant night's sleep.

The room also has a massive wall-mounted TV with the usual freeview channels, but I didn't switch the TV on as I was there to work. Wifi access was free, with a good signal that never wavered, and I was given the access code at check-in, which did me for the duration of my stay. Unfortunately I didn't get a phone signal from my room, but my colleague got one so maybe it depends on which network you use. This wasn't a problem; I could make phone calls or texts from upstairs in the bar, restaurant or lobby area.

I didn't eat dinner in the restaurant; instead I had room service which again was very easy and efficient; there was a large selection on offer and the food was tasty, well presented and reasonably priced for a 4* city centre hotel. Breakfast was a treat - continental breakfast was buffet-style and offered a huge variety of fresh fruit, cereals, bread, croissants, meats and cheeses; hot items were ordered on arrival, cooked freshly and brought to your table. I didn't partake of the cooked breakfast but there was plenty of choice for every palate. Tea/coffee and toast were brought to your table; such a pleasure to get 'real' tea (not teabags) and not to have to queue for a toast machine!

Checkout was equally easy and straightforward, again the staff were friendly and chatty. The whole experience was a real treat and I look forward to returning to this hotel for leisure instead of business, so I can take advantage of the pool, gym and leisure facilities as well as the convenient location for shopping!

Room Tip: Reception is actually on Level 5 (street level at the front of the hotel, but built on a hill) so if...

Ideally located if arriving in to the Scottish capital by rail, this modern and stylish hotel is both welcoming and convenient for exploring the city. Staff are efficient and helpful. Rooms represent a good level of comfort and excellent standards of cleanliness. Breakfast was very good value for money and plentiful. We would definitely stay here again.

This was our first stay in Scotland and it was in a very nice hotel.

All of the buildings look old in Edinburgh but inside them is a diferent story,

THe Apex Waterloo is a modern stylish very nice hotel. We stayed in a superior double room. It was very spacious, with a sofa and 42" TV. Bath and shower room were very large also. Everything was clean and tidy, and all good.

The spa is free to use and you have the pool and sauna/steam room for use. Again very clean and good facilities.

Staff were helpful and friendly, all you need really!

Location is very good. It was a 5 min walk from the main Waverley train station where all the airport/local busses go to. The hotel is in the city centre and is in a good location to get to local attractions.

Would certainly recommend this hotel and would stay again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room above the 5th floor. IF you stay here, have a superior room.

A hidden oasis in the centre of Edinburgh. Having stayed at this hotel several times I
have always found the rooms to be very comfortable and the location convenient. The
staff are very friendly and helpful and the spa and leisure facilities, although small, are
a welcome respite at the end of the day.

Central location, not more than 10 mins to best parts of Edinburgh, reception staff excellent, rooms spacious and clean, breakfast good, real value for money and couldn't fault our stay. Have stayed on 3 occasions now and reluctant to stay elsewhere when in Edinburgh. Tiny criticism, tea pots too small at breakfast!
