“At home in Edinburgh”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2011

I would definitely stay at this hotel again if I am ever fortunate enough to return to Edinburgh. It is very well situated near the main train station - even with a special connection to the station from the hotel, buses and all the sights of Edinburgh including the shopping. But what makes it a great hotel is the level of service and the wonderful friendly and supportive staff - we did not find anyone who didn't have us feeling valued and "at home" - nothing was too much trouble.

Room Tip: I don;t think there would be a bad room at this hotel.

Stayed here with my daughter at the beginning of November for 1 night as she is at Edinburgh uni and it was also a break from the uni for her. This was the third time we had stayed in the hotel. Rooms very nice and have everything required. Very big screen TVs. Service by all staff was absolutely fantastic. We don't have breakfast in the hotel but dine in a little cafe a few doors down. We did dine in the hotel one evening on our first visit and enjoyed the meal. Like the fact that there is seating in the reception area and, of course, the bar just beside it. Particularly like the fact that the hotel is so central. I always travel to Edinburgh by train and it is very close to Waverley Station. We also went to Edinburgh Playhouse this time and it was central for that. Would definitely recommend.

The hotel is near the bus and train station, within a walking distance to Princess Street and the Royal Mile.

The room was simply great. We had a double room with a really comfortable King size bed and a big flat TV and the possiblity of borrowing DVDs from the reception. There was a good number of amenities in the room that made our stay even more relaxing. The room was at the back of the hotel and was surprisingly quiet. The only negative aspect is that we felt the room was a little cold though the heating was on.

Breakfast was varied and included hot dishes and freshly baked pastries apart from a selection of fruits, yogurts, cereals and juices.

The staff was friendly and very helpful.

We''ll come back for sure in our next visit to Edinburgh.

My colleagues and I stayed at this hotel in Dec 2011 for two nights whilst on business in Edinburgh.
Location is great, situated centrally next to the main shopping area and 2 minutes from Edinburgh Waverley station.
First impressions were really good as the reservations team had pre-checked our party in and we could just pick up the keys and go straight to our rooms with no fuss/waiting around (this is something I requested though - I don't think it is a standard procedure). Hotel lobby was clean and modern with a small bar area and a restaurant off to the sides.

However, it is worth noting that not all of the staff in this hotel are polite and friendly. I was kept waiting several times and was basically ignored on one occasion when I wanted to ask directions - one man said "I dont really work here" (goodness knows what he was doing behind the reception desk then!) and another woman merely said "I'll deal with you in a minute" and then proceeded to check in 2 other people who were behind me in the queue. After 10 minutes of waiting I had to speak to another member of staff. It is not clear if there is a concierge although there is a separate desk near reception which was never manned whilst we were there. A hotel of this standard really ought to have a concierge present to stop customers taking up the time of the check-in desk.

The rooms were large (we were staying in Superior doubles, deluxe doubles and one was in the master suite with 2 floors!) and very clean but dimly lit and the air conditioning appeared to be on a timer which came on and off as it pleased. The bathrooms didn't have any heating source at all and in Dec were absolutely freezing - this did not make you want to use the large bath or walk-in shower!! However, once I did brave the cold the shower was hot and powerful which is always a bonus. There were bath robes, fluffy clean towels and the usual toiletries supplied.
Within the rooms itself, there were free tea/coffee/hot choc/water facilities, crisps, jelly beans, biscuits etc which was a nice touch but no mini bar, which is slightly odd.
There is however, free Wifi installed in each room and a big plasma screen tv.

The breakfast at the hotel is lovely with self-service continental buffet and a table-service cooked breakfast menu. Staff in the restaurant were friendly and attentive. Makes a good start to the day!

I didn't use the gym facilities myself, but was informed by my colleague that they were distinctly average - the pool wasn't long enough for a proper swim, there isn't enough gym equipment which results in people queuing for 20 mins to use a treadmill and there are no spin dryers for wet kit etc.

In addition to this, it is worth noting that 2 of our party had workmen lettting themselves into their rooms apparently to clean air conditioning filters. However, they didn't knock and had no permission from the occupants of the room to be in there. One of my colleagues was caught in a compromising position in his room causing considerable embarassment! There are no locks on the inside of the door to prevent this happening either. The hotel manager was suitably apologetic but that's clearly not the point as it happened to two separate people.

Taking all of this into consideration, I would describe this city centre hotel as average. It could have been very good if there was more attention to detail such as warming the rooms up and putting in brighter lights etc but it has let itself down a bit on its attention to detail.

Room Tip: Superior doubles and Deluxe doubles are virtually the same - save yourself the money and choose the...

Decent value with nice rooms and large screen TVs in each room but you can hear the traffic all night. The key to this hotel is the location....quite good....near trains, busses and cabs.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms above the fifth floor and in the back.....you need to keep the bartenders attention as...
