“Good apartment - big maintenance problems”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 24, 2009

Stayed in the Museum Apartment in the beginning of April 2009. And what can I say - the apartment itself is definitely a four-star. It is well-furnished, and the location is splendid. Just off the Royal Mile, opposite the Greyfryar's Bobby pub (and the grave of the most faithful dog) in a quiet spot. BUT, there were big maintenance problems when we were there. First, the elevator didn't work, and obviously hadn't for some time (according to the grafitti on the out-of-order-note) - this meant approx 50 steps up to the second floor with luggage and all. To make a long story short; we didn't have hot water for the first 24 hours and the last day, the dish-washer didn't work, the central heating worked for one afternoon and not for the other three days, there was no refill of toiletpaper, no change of towels - all this was too bad, because it could have been so good. We tried to contact the staff about the heating, hot-water and dish-washer, and they were friendly enough, without being able to help much. The dishwasher was fixed the day before we left, but then the heating was off again, and the hot water was gone... Then, it doesn't help that the apt is good, when the facilities you are promised - and have paid for - don't work.

A large group of us rented 3x3bedroom apartments and 1x1 bedroom apartments. They were spotless and could not fault anything. The place you collect your key is where you can store your luggage prior to or after arriving. The water was a slight problem last one in the shower had cold water. Excellent location.

This was a WONDERFUL apartment! BEAUTIFUL!! GREAT LOCATION!! This apartment was right across from the beautiful St. Giles cathedral directly on the Royal Mile. We looked out our window into the Royal Mile! The apartment was clean and HUGE!! The pictures on the webiste are real.

We stayed with another couple and had a great time. We were within walking distance of all the main "touristy" things to do in Edinburgh. The apartment did have a washer and dryer combo but did take forever to wash and dry (1 1/2 hours to just wash the clothes)...but it did have one.

I rented apartment 4 at the St Giles and was not disappointed with quality of accommodation and the location.

The property is located opposite St Giles Cathedral on the High Street (which forms part of the Royal Mile - which goes from the castle to Holyrood Palace). This is a very convenient part of town, within 5 minutes of the Castle and also 5 mins of Princess St. I have to disagree with one review which stated this was not a nice part of town, it is in fact a very nice and historic part of Edinburgh.

The one downside of the accommodation was that there was no parking, but there was a car park on Niddry Street which is within 5 minutes of the apartments - so not too far to carry bags.

Apartment 4 was very large with 3 double bedrooms, with one ensuite. There was also a large kitchen and living room and a bathroom. The apartment had laminate flooring throughout, and was very clean.

Apartment 4 was located at the back of the accommodation so had no views of the cathedral. The only view to be had was from the living room and looked out over Princess Street and the Balmoral Hotel (located at 1 Princess St).

I was very happy with my stay at the apartment and will condsider staying again.

Make sure that when you book - you know exactly which apartment you are booking.

Unbeknown to me I booked the Museum Apartment which was on Chambers Street. Most of the other apartments (that are advertised) are actually on High Street - 2 streets away - directly across from the St. Giles Cathedral.

However the location of this apartment was fantastic - just off the Royal Mile in a quieter street. Just around the corner from some great restaurants on George IV Bridge.

The apartment itself was fully self contained and fitted out tastefully - although nothing luxurious. It was nice alternative to staying in a hotel.

The only negative thing I can say is that I was told that there was a tumble dryer in the apartment. I was mis-informed.

Worse place I ever stayed. Staff utterly contemptible. They took money out of my credit card without my authorisation and when confronted very aggressive and arrogant. Would not recommend this place at all. Very hostile place to stay and the st. Giles as a street is not safe.

Overall the accommodation was quite acceptable although the price was a little high. The location was a little deceptive as it was listed as High St (next to the key pick-up) however was actually about 1km down the road...still on the Royal Mile; kind of....at any rate the location where we stayed was still close to everything and was fine but something to watch out for when booking.

The actual apartment was quite nice; TV was quite small and cut out every few minutes on some channels which was slightly annoying but didn't spoil the stay as the TV was being used once a day for news.

Only negative I could find really is that tea and coffee is provided however there was no salt and pepper shakers in the apartment and whilst cooking this would have been handy (very very minor detractor ;) and the washing machine was crap but that was expected :)

Overall it was nice and the owners were fantastic when we checked in. It was pricey (in fact the most expensive stay in my trip across the UK); I don't know if I am convinced it was worth it; I think there are cheaper options that give the same benefits however the apartment was quite large which was good after staying at hotels for so long...

Families would probably see the maximum benefits of this accommodation.
