“Lovely Family Trip”
Reviewed February 9, 2009

We stayed at the James Square Apartments on the 4th and 5th of January this year and were very happy with the quality of the apartments. We stayed in a 3 bed apartment which gave us plenty room. The beds were very comfy and after a day shopping in Edinburgh a welcome for our weary bodies. The facilities in the apartment were great. Agnes met us on our arrival to give us the codes etc and welcome us to Edinburgh. A great deal of extras were included, which is not always the case in apartments, these included milk, tea, coffee, sugar and even fruit juice. There was shampoo and bubble bath all the cleaning essentials and an abundance of clean fluffy towels.
The apartment was a 5 min walk from Haymarket and about a 10 min bus ride into town so very convenient yet in a quiet area. Behind the apartment there was a mulit screen cinema with restaurants a casino and ten pin bowling. There were also plenty of shops in the surrounding area for food shopping and we discovered a fab cafe that did a huge cooked breakfast. I can't recall the name but it was next to pizza takeaway. I am pretty fussy when in comes to holiday accomodation but this apartment was beyond expectations. Would recommend and am definatley going back soon.

  • Liked — It was very homely - a real home away from home. Roof garden was fab
  • Disliked — nothing

My friends and I stayed in apartment 51/3 in St.James Square last summer. The purpose of the trip was for a relaxing weekend break to coincide with my birthday...it was fabulous!
The accomodation was wonderful and the proprieter very welcoming...we all wholehartedly agree that the homeliness and style of the apartment went a long way to making out holiday as special as it was.
The location is great as it's not directly in the hustle and bustle but close enough to walk into the city centre in about 15 minutes and the bus stop is 2 minutes away and as cheap as chips!

We have booked again for August therefore I would recommend the apartments without hesitiation!

I recently stayed in Apartment 25 James Square with my girlfriend and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The apartment overlooks quiet private gardens (no busy roads!) yet is only 10 mins walk to the city centre. It was bright and immaculate, with lovely touches such as milk and coffee, bread and butter etc left for us. I'd love to bring my family back here (my 7 yr old brother would love the swimming pool) so asked to see a couple of the other apartments. They are all furnished to the same high standards as number 25 and I would be very happy bringing my parents back here for a holiday.

Overall a real gem in Edinburgh!

A brilliant find for a long weekend away with the girls!
The apartment we stayed in, no 51/3, was very homely and extremely well decorated - so much so we didnt want to go home! The owner Agnes was very helpful and made us feel welcome throughout our stay. On arrival there was a starter pack which included milk, bread, tea etc which was much apreciated after a long day. I would recommend this place to all as it is a great location and is excellent value for money. I will definitely be staying here again! Donna

We were really unhappy with our stay at flat 25, 51 James Square. We were so dissatisfied we left a day early. The flat was much smaller than the website suggested, smelled musty and was poorly maintained (broken blinds, missing and broken floor tiles, dirty skylight windows, and crockery with food still on!).

The flat is near some busy roads and we found one of the bedrooms unusable because of the constant noise through the plastic skylight.

Also, not as convenient for the city centre as described on the website, and the building looks like it was converted 20 or 30 years ago to a low standard.

We are not fussy travellers, but thought this was a really poor quality place to stay for the price.

Overall a convenient location and good quality holiday apartment, especially if there is a large group (we stayed in an apartment that would have slept eight).

The location is very handy for Haymarket station, and as previous reviewers have stated the bus journey to Princes Street is very convenient. You’d have to be a slow walker to take half an hour to walk to the city centre: I’d say it was 15 minutes to the Castle, similar to the end of Lothian Road/Princes Street.

The owners rent several apartments in this very large residential block, so your experience may vary, but the furnishings (whilst somewhat old-fashioned) were of a high standard and the beds were particularly comfortable. The pool is small but clean and great for children. All necessary services are available nearby, and there are some nice touches on arrival – two towels for each person, milk, butter, bread, jam and coffee provided. I’d prefer this over a soulless corporate let.

Recommended, especially for families and groups of close friends.
