“A Very Pleasant Hotel Brasserie”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2012

The Brasserie at The Norton House Hotel is most certainly worth a visit. The menu is lively and varied with some very creative dishes using excellent quality local produce. The cooking is of a very high standard. Although there is a more formal restaurant next door, the standard of dishes served in The Brasserie are every bit as good. When the food is served you feel that there has been care taken over every aspect of the cooking and presentation. The only negative I noticed was with the service. The staff were very pleasant but mostly Eastern European and I had significant problems in being able to understand at least two of them and, similarly, they seemed to find it difficult to understand me. This did get in the way a bit as I was keen to ask them more about the food and the dishes which I had chosen.

“A pleasant indulgence”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 2, 2012

The hotel is set in beautiful surroundings and close to Edinburgh airport.
It is a very old building with lots of character, but the furnishings in the cocktail bar would benefit from a makeover as they are a trifle worn.

The food is good and the hand cut chips are 'to die for'. The service however is very slow and drinks are very much overpriced.

“nice meal but over priced”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 30, 2012

(Firstly - the address is wrong at the top of this review - its not on Bruntsfield Cres! Norton house is just off the A8 near edinburgh airport) Came for dinner with some girlfriends a little reluctantly as the last few family lunches here have not been great. The food was lovely, the service can be slow and the menu is a little limited (and odd - Israeli couscous made us all laugh? What exactly is that?). My seabass was beautifully cooked and the pesto and gnocci that came was really tasty. Not cheap but this is Edinburgh. But the wine list - cheapest bottle of white wine - £23 for Italian plonk - was over the top. We all felt that the wine list was very over priced. It would put us off going back for a girls night out, possibly not for dinner with hubbie. I also think this restaurant lacks atmoshere, possibly because it is more of a hotel restaurant perhaps?

We had a great lunch, service was a bit slow, but Resturant was very busy. I would definitely return here, also would reccommend to others.

“Food needs a rethink”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2012

I have used the restaurant here for a number of years and sad to say it has deteriorated a great deal. The venue is lovely and a great deal has been invested recently the Spa facilities look terrific and staff could not be more polite but, and it is a big but the food is poor, The presentation is lovely the service polished if painfully slow, but the food lacks flavour.
My colleague had the terrine and the ox cheek both tasted of, well nothing much, my starter was so memorable that i have already forgotten what it was. I had to ask for bread with the starters and when it arrived it appeared to be two half slices of sliced bread.
The day we were there it was empty but it still took the best part of half an hour to serve the starters. All in all a very poor experience and I know they can do better because they have in the past. Need to get a grip on the kitchen as it is letting this place down very badly
