The GF girlfriend writes:

As someone who's gluten intolerant, eating out can be a risky business. I have had to make do with a limited menu (one or two options), or trying to adapt the menu to suits my dietary requirements.

Imagine my joy and surprise to be handed such an extensive menu in the Compass Bar where I could choose almost every option. A real selection once again! Haggis, battered fish (separate fryers), fishcakes, steak pie! STEAK PIE!! Turns out the owner is gluten intolerant and wants to provide people in a similar position with a real choice.

All of this and it was really tasty too.

The Compass Bar should be commended for their gluten free selection. Great food, well priced, lovely atmosphere. We'll be back (and we'll be trying out their new place, the Galley on nearby Salamander St soon).

We were certainly 'arrested' by the the quality of the pub food at this Leith Restaurant and it had nothing to do with the view of the Leith Police Station directly opposite!
We've been here for breakfast, tea and now lunch and have been satisfied every time we've been there.
Good choices on the menu and the quality of the main and desert courses was very good. Their steak and ale pie was very tasty indeed.
With a couple of glasses of wine and two soft drinks the Bill came to around £65 .
Staff were very friendly and we will be back!
I'm sure the Leith Police would not 'dismithith us' or the restaurant.

As a Leither, I so much wanted this restaurant to be great, and indeed our first two or three visits were OK. Maybe they have changed their chef recently, but our last visit was not so great. In for a lunch with friends, we thought that the home-made vegetable soup would be nice but it was quite tasteless and, as it cooled, an oily residue settled on top. This was followed by roast beef baguettes which looked the business but the beef was so tough and chewy that it was almost inedible. Think I'll wait until they change their chef again!

Good service, varied menu, excellent squid, fantastic risotto, scallops and black pudding brilliant and good old fashioned fish and chips. The only flaw was a mistake with the bill, but easily sorted, definitely go back
