We have been going to this pub/restaurant for many years now and have never been disappointed in the reception we have had or the quality of the meals. We are impressed by the spread of choice and price of the varied menues and the quality of the food served. We travel roughly 23 miles just for the food and the Wheatsheaf Symington has never let us down yet. Thank you to all the staff at the Wheatsheaf.

I should think that this inn is a well known secret to the local community but for my wife and I looking for lunch somewhere on spec. this was a remarkable find. The village was much larger than I thought it might be so to find a pub doing such fine food off the beaten track on a weekday was tremendous. The beer was good as was the menu (for lunches-dinners as well). We had a straightforward two course meal with coffee - beef olives with fresh veg., boiled new potatoes and chips as well; excellently cooked presented and served whilst madame had a pot pourri of fish which was also well received and enjoyed. For this country pub to employ five chefs is I suppose a fair indication of its popularity and support. The menu was quite extensive as was the wine list (which I though a bit overpriced) but the food is excellent ad I am more than happy to recommend the Wheatsheaf to any other fortunate traveller.

As I say, the food's excellent and the service is Ayrshire friendly and efficient. Sea Bream perfectly cooked preceded by scallops and black pudding, followed by pear and ginger crumble also delicious. Steak pie a great success.

I've visited the Wheatsheaf Inn on many occasions over the years and have always found it consistently good. One of the few things that can tempt my 95 yr old mother out of the house is the promise of a Sunday roast beef lunch by the log fire. She was unable to make it on this occasion, we decided to go anyway as a birthday treat for my husband. Having prebooked , we were shown to a table in a rear room of the building. We soon realised that the accoustics of the room when busy meant we could barely hold a conversation as the sound bounced off the low ceiling to the extent that we could barely ourselves speak. We requested to be moved to the main bar area and the waitress happily sorted this out for us after a 10 minute wait. For starters one of us had cullen skink which has been a staple choice on the menu for years, the feedback was that it was as good as ever. The rest of us chose a fish tempura, scallops, salmon and haddock from the specials menu and it was very tasty and crisp - a promising start. Two orders of steak pie and two of roast beef were next up. The steak pie got a thumbs up but sadly the roast beef was lacking, Not only in appearance, dry with not enough gravy but also the quality was far from the usual standard. We asked for additional gravy but even with this on top the meat itself lacked flavour and was a bit chewy. We overheard another table of guests making similar comments but after having complained already and asking to move tables, we decided to skip dessert and coffee and leave without complaining. The staff looked pretty harassed and although they were never rude they didn't look as if they had time to stop and deal with extra complaints. We will probably go back but not for a while and not on a busy Sunday.
