Description: Known for years as The Paraffin Lamp, this popular pub and restaurant has been extensively refurbished and relaunched as The Canny Man. Situated in Lugton, near Kilmarnock in Ayreshire, it is fast becoming a local favourite thanks to the welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff. The interior is a seamless blend of old and new, complete with traditional stone walls, wooden furniture, and modern patterned wallpaper. Head Chef Scott Neilson has put together a classic British menu, with some continental influences, and this is complemented by daily specials. With tasty steaks, oven-baked pizzas and some excellent fish dishes on offer, you'll be spoilt for choice. For lazy lunches, coffee and cakes by the log fire,mid-week dinners and Sunday lunch with the family.

My wife and I returned but this time with my brother and his family. We had booked 5 adults and 2 children for 6.00pm and were seated at a round table with a nice white tablecloth and good quality cutlery. Very friendly and chatty staff, chose from the two course pre-theatre meal, good portions of well cooked food and a very enjoyable atmosphere. Pleased with our decision to go back again.

We were taking friends out as a retirement gift. We arrived on Friday 7pm (Steak night). We had four starters, my beloved had a mixed grill, our friends had a fillet steak, chicken and i had the cajun salmon off the special menu. Followed by three puddings, accompanied by 2 red wines, a bottle of white, a coffee and a tea. Quality of the food excellent, staff attentive but not rushing us in any way and a very reasonable bill at the end of the night.

Highly recommended and we will definitely be back.

Live locally and phoned one Friday afternoon to get a table for that evening - no problem at all. Staff were great as usual and had a good table and were served promptly. Very enjoyable meal and great standard of food and service as usual. Would def recommend as overall its great value and never had a bad experience.

This evening my husband and I went out expecting to have a lovely meal at The Canny Man but instead we were presented with the worst meal I've ever had. We both ordered a burger which was absolutely diabolical. The 'burger' had never even seen a cow and was pink outside and in. Was more like spam than a burger and was accompanied by cheap frozen chips. At £9.25 a main meal we would expect a higher quality food and service. I now feel ill and have had to go straight to my bed. Not happy at all and will not be back.

Dear Candy,

Thank you for your review on Trip Advisor. As explained to you on Saturday night all our beef is supplied by our family butcher, Tulloch's of Paisley. Our burgers are 100% beef.

The Canny Man was awarded membership of the prestigious Scottish Beef Club only 3 weeks ago and underwent strict checks to ensure that we met their high standards. All our beef can be traced back as far as the farm where the cow was reared. Processing is strictly controlled and monitored at every stage, so suppliers are able to pass the details of the products purchased to the chefs.

If you wish to discuss your comments with me personally, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerley,

Karel Kuhler
Operations Director
