Description: Known for years as The Paraffin Lamp, this popular pub and restaurant has been extensively refurbished and relaunched as The Canny Man. Situated in Lugton, near Kilmarnock in Ayreshire, it is fast becoming a local favourite thanks to the welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff. The interior is a seamless blend of old and new, complete with traditional stone walls, wooden furniture, and modern patterned wallpaper. Head Chef Scott Neilson has put together a classic British menu, with some continental influences, and this is complemented by daily specials. With tasty steaks, oven-baked pizzas and some excellent fish dishes on offer, you'll be spoilt for choice. For lazy lunches, coffee and cakes by the log fire,mid-week dinners and Sunday lunch with the family.

Prepare for BIG portions but to be a little disappointed in the taste and presentation. Very much feels like a chain restaurant and you get the feel that everything is in a freezer waiting to be served.
Plus points, the staff are very friendly and helpful, the sweets are better than the main courses and its not at all expensive.
We'll try it again maybe.

Unfortunately I cannot comment on the quality of food or service at The Canny Man.We were refused the pleasure of eating outside on a lovely day, despite the fact that there were many tables occupied with people having a drink. The reason given was that it was going to rain. There was plenty of room indoors should we have had to move indoors. However it didn't rain that day, which I know is somewhat surprising since, as we all know in Scotland it has either been raining, is raining or is going to rain. So I completely failed to grasp the point of the refusal.

I have eaten at the Canny Man several times over the past couple of years and it is a place I have never received a disappointing meal or bad service. Staff are friendly and attentive, without being overbearing; food is fresh, reasonably priced and good size portions that fill you but don't uncomfortably stuff you. The Canny Man is good in summer or winter - beer garden and childrens play area outside or cosy log fire when cold.

My most recent visit was this weekend, we arrived at 5.30pm and were prompty shown to a table, it was already reasonably busy, but the good thing is the tables are not too close together so you don't feel like you are sitting with the people at the next table!

The menu has a good selection of dishes and there is always a seperate specials menu with extra starters, mains and desserts. I had the chicken with peppercorn sauce and my mum and the salmon. Main courses come with the most fabulous mashed potatoes I have ever tasted! Also served with a small selection of fresh vegetables (peppers, onion and courgettes, but this changes seasonally and I am assuming with availabililty) and a choice of boiled potatoes or chips.

We were served our food promptly which was good as sometimes when only ordering main courses you can wait half an hour or more to be served in some places! Both plates were cleared, meals delicious and a good portion size. Desserts were baked chocolate tart with white chocolate icecream (from specials) and meringue with cream and fresh fruit. Again, both were delicous and plates were cleared. The bill for 2 mains, 2 desserts and 2 soft drinks was just over £30 which I think was excellent value for money.

The restaurant is clean and tidy and nicely decorated, toilets are clean too. It is family owned which possibly makes the difference with the good service. I'd recommend this to anyone, whether it be for an unplanned meal or a special occasion as it is a lovely setting.

If you have children with you, they give out colour in pencils and pictures to keep them entertained.

Also, The Canny Man is in Lugton, which is near Kilmarnock but not actually in it. It is probably about a 30-35 minute drive from Glasgow city centre and 15-20 minutes from Kilmarnock.

They have a huge carpark so no need to worry about car parking, even on a busy Saturday night.
