I am all for small hotels and have spent the last ten years staying in many hotels whilst travelling on business. However this is one of the worst! Firstly hotel carpark is a nightmare to get in and out of and you have to park on a very steep slope. When I arrived the reception area looked like a building site and there was only one poor elderly lady working (doing everything from receptionist, handyman to waitress!). She was very sweet but did not have a clue what she was doing! My room (1) was very basic, no proper lock on the door, just a screw bolt!! As a women on my own I had to push the sofa against the door to feel safe! The heating did not work, so had a plug in heater! The bathrooms have no heating, so ok at this time of year, but must be freezing in winter! Also the tv reception was dreadful (like watching through snow) and elderly lady had no idea how to fix it! On the plus side the room was clean!
Meal wise, I did inform them a week in advance that I had a gluten allergy, but no special arrangements were made and I had very little chose from the meau. Breakfast was fine. Also their machine would not accept my business Amex card so had to pay cash myself. Really a very poor hotel which appears to be run on a shoe string.
We booked superior room with bathroom for £85 and were looking forward to fine dining and cocktails as a treat, the website does make the hotel look impressive.
The room was very basic - the TV reception could only get Channel 5, there was no clock, no working phone, no computer port, the UHT milk was off and no biscuits provided. Kingsize bed was two singles pushed together.
The menu was standard pub food with only 8 main meal choices and having 5 cocktails does not make a cocktail bar. The restaurant/bar was tastefully decorated and the staff were friendly - we decided not to eat in, so cannot comment on quality of food, though breakfast was fine.
stayed in room 5 , the room itself was lovely especially with the view across the river but the overall finish to the room was very poor, the noise from the bathroom every half an hour was horrendous sounded like the washbasin falling off the wall, not too amusing at three in the morning.the tv reception terrible,we also thought the hotel was a little too far away from dundee town centre, although the staff were very helpful in ordering us taxis.if these little niggles are sorted the hotel will be excellent.the best part about our stay was the very friendly and helpful staff and the breakfastwas first class.
nice, adequately comfortable hotel, very friendly staff possibly because we seemed to be one of only two parties there. No Wi-fi, phone also didn't work. Newly remodeled: very tastefully done, but whoever signed off on the remodel job should be shot first, then sacked. Flat paint is already showing every smudge, scratch and scuff; no finish on the headboard so it's showing grease marks from people's heads leaning on it; bathroom door doesn't close, let alone latch or lock; drywall joints are cracking; shower handles are loose. Included breakfast was standard UK high-fat fare, not much choice despite their vaunted restaurant.
We ended up here having been bounced by the Landmark.
Very recently refurbished and in need of some added bits just to make it perfect: in room 4 it needs a shelf above the sink and possibly some other surfaces as there is no where to put toiletries. Shower excellent and the loo makes some interesting noises due to the water pressure in getting to the top of an old buidling!
The room was quite spacious although we had a third put-you-up bed in the sitting area which should have been removed but was then left. We were told that it was mean't to be there but as it caused the sofa to be turned lengthwise against it it seemed a bit bizzare!
The view from this room is quite spectacular which made up for the dreadful TV reception.
The hotel staff are really nice - they allowed us access to the internet via reception as they don't have this facility for guests.
We ate dinner in the restaurant. The menu is not extensive but what we had was excellent and quite obviously freshly prepared. The breakfast was also hot and fresh although if you were in a hurry the sedate service might be a problem, however this was a weekend so perhaps it is faster in the week.
The car park is a little tricky and if you have something larger than a medium sized saloon I would park it in the street!!!
