Owner description: Verdant Works | Made in Dundee | One Mill | Many Stories Verdant Works is a world-class visitor attraction which tells the story of Dundee’s industrial textile heritage in the atmospheric setting of a beautifully refurbished Mill building which dates back to 1833. The story of jute and the story of Dundee are inseparable. The industry employed 50,000 people in the city at its peak and supplied much of the world’s demand for jute goods. As you explore the self-led museum at your own pace you will: – Soak up the atmosphere of the cobbled 19th century courtyard – Enter a busy jute office of 1900 and meet some characters of the period – Find out how jute was harvested in India, how and why it came to Dundee and more about Dundee’s bustling docks – Experience the deafening sounds of the machines and see the jute process from raw fibre to woven cloth – See a typical Dundee ‘plettie’, learn about tenement life and the health of the mill workers. – Discover who ‘kettle bilers’ were and all about the reversal of traditional gender roles in Dundee – finding out about mill girls, Suffragettes and the unions. – Visit the Victorian Half-Time School and also see how the workers spent their precious leisure time. – Enjoy drop in family activities in our specially designed Red Box learning hub – Learn about pattern casting, engineering and stop to pick up tips for researching local and family history in our History Hub – Appreciate the stunning mill architecture from the two viewing platforms in the High Mill – Watch in awe as the 1801 Boulton & Watt beam engine chugs into action … and don’t forget to stop by our gift shop and café to get a well-earned cup of tea and Dundee cake!

If you or your family worked in the jute industry then you will be transported back in time with the distinctive smell when you enter the exhibition. From the clerical offices to the range of machinery and the stages of jute, it is an insight into the biggest industry Dundee ever had. The short films are very educational. I'd you know that women were the main workers for decades and that men stayed at home to look after the children? I certainly didn't. There was one thing I felt was missing and that was the overwhelming clatter of machinery that pervaded the mills. Perhaps it's a health and safety thing but I think a short audio recording would enhance the experience.

great museum- well laid out and plenty of time to read and explore the history and impact of the jute industry in Dundee. friendly welcome from the moment we arrived and good introductory talk before we started the visit. Excellent interaction from volunteer guide in the machine area and happy to chat and answer questions. Small cafe but homely and good home baking.
This a gem of a museum in Dundee. watch out for 2 for 1 tickets on Itison as we used this for our visit but this museum merits it's full price. delighted to hear they have gained lottery funding to continue to preserve the living history of Dundee.

Great museum lots to see and you can purchase a ticket cheaper when you combine the Discovery and the Verdant Works. The museum was well preserved and an interesting story about the hard working people of Dundee .There was a great wee cafe there too with very pleasant and helpful staff.

Visited here with the whole family - my children are 5 and 9 and where totally engaged and entertained.

Built around a living museum theme the interactive points were user friendly and easy to use. The staff were fantastic with the kids. Morning well spent.

Thanks for the positive review about your visit to Scotland's Jute Museum. It was nice to see your comments regarding the staff being good with the kids. Its funny to think that children used to work 12 hours a day in textile mills like Verdant Works - much better they are having fun in them now. Once again thanks for the positive review.

I have been in Dundee for 4 years now and finally I managed to visit this museum. It is an old jute mill converted to a museum and quite organised and comprehensive as far as communicating the city's jute past. I am originally from Calcutta, India so I could see the Jute connection which Dundee had with India and how the trade flourished in the 1800s. Quite a nice place to visit and I would recommend it. Slightly expensive entry ticket but the combination ticket with Discovery centre makes it worthwhile.
