We stumbled across this gourmet burger bar the other day whilst looking for somewhere to take our student daughter for lunch that would actually be healthy and walked round the corner and found Ketchup. We were seated at the back of the restarant which nice and quiet and given our extensive menus. The choice is huge, its all good stuff, Scottish beef, chicken, venison, vegetarian, you name it! The burgers when they arrived were delicious, my only gripe is that you have to pay extra for fries etc, although this seems to be the norm in these types of establishments. Its got a kind of 50's feel to it, but with a twist, you can order milk shakes and the coke comes in original bottles - smoothies are delish! Lovely place, would recommend if you like a good burger and reasonably priced, will definately return. Also the staff are really nice and friendly.

“Mixed: it depends”
Reviewed October 25, 2011

We've been eating here on and off for a few years now. It's hard to offer a fair overall assessment because the experience has varied quite a lot.

The food in our opinion is the best part. The burgers are the finest in town: they get the meat from a top local butcher and the result is a high-quality burger. The onion rings side orders are also great. And top marks for the alcoholic milk shakes.

But it's the human side of things that is really unpredictable so that you never know what you're going to get when you walk through the door. There are some staff there who are very good indeed. Not coincidentally they tend to be the long-term people who've been there for a year or two: they recognise us, they have a chat and a joke and they try to look after us. They know what they're doing and if the kitchen is a bit slow (which it often is) they know to hurry it along.

If you're unlucky, however, or go on a different night, you get the kind of service that infuriates. Our most recent visit was typical of this: three unsupervised new girls who tended to hide behind the counter to avoid customers and who were straight out of the I'm-a-Student-And-I-Really-Don't-Want-To-Be-Here school. Frankly they were unwelcoming, elusive and without the slightest rapport with customers. The food was also extravagantly long coming...and, as for trying to pay, well, we pretty much had to get our coats on and camp out by a till in order to get noticed.

So, caveat emptor. The food can be really good and some of the staff are nice and helpful. But the latter is very much a moveable feast.

Best of luck.

“Hit or Miss”
Reviewed October 11, 2011

Been here many a time (more so when I was at uni because students get 2for1). Have found that the food is a bit hit or miss - sometimes it has been outstanding and sometimes it has been rubbish. For example, often the onion rings are drenched in grease which is off-puting and not tasty. Perhaps a bit pricy for what is essentially a burger but if it's good then it is worth it. They often have 2 for 1 deals on flyers etc.

The staff are mostly all young people, nice enough and friendly enough but not much else to say.

Ketchup is joined onto the Social bar so in my opinion it is not somewhere to go to eat on a Friday/Saturday night as its more of a pub atmosphere than restaurant.

Really wish Ketchup got it right 100% of the time as when its good it's great.

“'Who killed Bambi' was epic!”
Reviewed September 14, 2011

I had a superb burger at Ketchup last night. The venison burger 'who killed bambi' was superb. The service in this restaurant was fast and efficient. The bill for 5 of us was £70 which wasn't bad cosindering we had 4 shakes, a beer and a red wine. I woudl dine here again.
