The food was very good and the waitstaff was amusing to watch (which we were warned about before we went).

“First visit brilliant, second visit OK”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2011

Friendly Staff giving excellent service,Lovely restaurant,First night the food was excellent, so we decided to go again the following night, unfortunately as sometimes happens on these occasions the food was not quite to the same standard.ie very greasy batter on the fish, therefore we have marked it down. Had it have been the same standard as the first night we would have marked it excellent.

“Where is the love...?”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 27, 2011

Oh dear - not complete a disaster but a definate dissapointment. Average from start to finish except not when the bill came. This place has such potential, a lovely layout and traditional features but who is in charge? Its uninviting restaurarnt which is so quiet and cold, where the service was poor, no clearing glasses, salt, pepper, bread rolls and butter dishes still out when your having dessert, no table cloths.... The food was very over priced for what it was. When we first got the menus I though it was the bar menu and their had been a mistake - there was absolutely nothing exciting, except possibly the scallops which were double the price of every other choice. The Irish coffees were the worst we have ever had anywhere in the world. The staff were plesant enough but seriously - are they playing at hotels here? Would be easy to inject a bit of love into this place, a touch of soft lighting, light the fires, some tasteful music, a decent menu. What a shame, what a lot of money for nothing special. To be fair the bottle of red we chose was fantastic - saved! Will not go back for a meal in my lifetime anyway. Shame on the owners for wasting such a lovely building.

“No food so no review!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2011

Sorry, I cannot rate this restaurant. We went in at 5.10p.m. looking for an evening meal - receptionist said that they did not serve food till 6p.m. No offer to take a seat and wait, or to have a drink in the bar. She only suggested a chip shop across the road. We both left, as did five Americans behind us. We all ate in another hotel down the road which was 'Open All Day'. Such a pity - seemed a nice clean Hotel.

We are always interested in people’s comments though I am not quite sure where this one is going.

Our restaurant opens at six in the evening, yes. We are not open all day, OK. To be ‘Open all day’ you have to be heavily reliant on freezer food and fat fryers, euphemistically called ‘Traditional Scottish’ cooking. I do not knock it. It has its place in the culinary firmament but we have eschewed this path. A conscious decision has been taken by the Annandale Arms to go for fresh seasonal produce and locally grown if possible.

The Annandale’s signature dish at the moment consists of a mouth-watering half-netted wild Solway salmon. It is seared until the skin is crisp and served on a bed of wild Solway samphire with Solway brown shrimps. This is very simple and it is this simplicity that lets its quality and flavour shine through. For next month’s dish and to reflect the coming of autumn we will be serving a roast loin of local red deer venison stuffed with onions and herbs, wrapped in crepinette finished with a red wine jus.

You must appreciate that neither of these dishes lend themselves to ‘Open all day’cooking. It is our experience that our diners and guests who like what we do tend to eat a little later in the evening and make a bit of a thing of it.

I am sorry we could not accommodate you and your American friends on this occasion perhaps you will like to book a table and see what chef has in store for you some other time.
