“First Class”
Reviewed July 20, 2010

Stopped at the Star hotel on the way back from the Open Golf at St Andrews. Was met by the owner who made us very welcome even though we arrived earlier than expected.

The hotel was clean and our two rooms were ideal for our family of four. The breakfast was a full Scottish Breakfast and again the staff was very helpful.

The hotel has two bars; the one at the back seems to be for locals, who made us very welcome and has a pool table and sky TV.

Intend to stay there again in October, which says it all.

Did not stay in the hotel so cannot comment on the room amenities etc.

We made the mistake of entering the Public Bar at the back of the hotel, entrance on the side street Mansfield Place. Avoid this bar at all costs.

The clientele in the bar (and the barman) realised we were not white and Protestant and become unfriendly. Threats of violence and physical attempts to stop us leaving the bar required 999 police intervention.

Whether your reception in the main hotel would mirror this, dependent on ethnicity or religion, we cannot say.

The review is not true at all. The person in question was a total stranger to the bar and was banned for life after the inciedent happened, also the police were not called to the bar but came to see us after the person was arrested for racial abuse. Also at no time were the bar staff aware of the problem or involved in it or were any of my regular clientle

A very friendly welcome was received from the owner. The room was warm and had everything required including a very comfortable bed. The breakfast was excellent and served with cheerfulness. Altogether an experience well worth repeating.

Good value for money, room nice and clean, if a little compact! Good food, nothing fancy but decent portions and very nice. Recommended.

Stayed here a couple of years ago. Was in Moffat for a wedding and stumbled across this little gem. Really welcoming and friendly staff, comfortable beds and clean rooms and a nice breakfast in the morning.

Moffat itself was a lovely little place. Didn't really have much time to explore but some quaint little shops and friendly locals. Would return to the town and this hotel.

The narrowness of the hotel just adds to the novelty - the rooms are more than adequate in size.

  • Liked — Novelty of the narrowness of the building and the location
  • Disliked — Only there for one night!!

Stayed an overnight in this lovely hotel, staff and food were first class, hotel was very comfortable and very central for everything in Moffat. The proprietors where very friendly made you feel as if you had been going to the hotel for years, taking time out to talk to you.One word of warning if your party is only two stay clear of the combo it would do you for starter and main meal it was excellent Keep up the good work Allison & staff
