Owner description: Visit this impressive townhouse and discover a 16th century family home. The remains of this late 16th century house show how architecture changed from the heavily defended tower house to a new, more domestic scale. Sir Thomas MacLellan of Bombie built the castle in 1582 to function as a grand family home. Head ‘below stairs’ into the dark vaults to get a sense of the working conditions of family servants and look out for the Laird’s Lug’, a secret spy hole behind the great hall fireplace, from which the laird could eavesdrop on his guests.

“A nice "home".”
Reviewed July 11, 2012

This castle is right on High Street. It is a good example of a "Castle Home" as it was not for defence. There are good displays in the kitchen and it is a very well landscaped spot in a fine town. Well worth stopping in and enjoying this historic location.

“Middle of Town”
Reviewed June 30, 2012

The grounds and castle were well kept and quite dry considering the amount of rain that fell this week. Labelling quite good. Perhaps a recommended trip route?

“Iconic Image of Kirkcudbright”
Reviewed February 3, 2012

Home of the Lords of Kirkcudbright this fortified town house is sited near the harbou and the Moat Brae with its canon pointing over and protecting the harbour. Fronted by a Statue of the Robert Burns rumoured to have written the Selkirk Grace ( "Some Hae meat ...." ) when he visited the Isle estate. This castle crowns the historic centre of the town and has all the intrigue you would want, it even has a spyhole behind the hearth in the Great Hall. A wee boys dream castle. .

Reviewed November 21, 2011

right in the centre of the town it is easy to get to and well worth a visit. I would recommend getting the Historic Scotland Dumfries & Galloway Explorer Pass which allows you to save money on admission to 9 top historic attractions.
