The Selkirk Arms Hotel
Ranked #1 of 4 Hotels in Kirkcudbright
Certificate of Excellence

Kirkcudbright is packed solid with things to look at - go down any of the delightful paths into hidden courtyards full of flowers and pastel coloured walls, towards the Tolbooth and Selkirk Arms. So many art shops to meander around, too. So what better, on a hot summers day, than to sit down for a drink in the comfy lounge or in the shady garden of the Arms, imagining Burns doing the same while composing the Grace. Food is good too and reasonably priced.

We have just had a break at the Selkirk Arms to celebrate my Birthday. The stay was a pleasure from start to finish.
Reception was efficient and very welcoming, poterage was offered without asking.
Our room was of a reasonable size and spotlessly clean with every ammenity. It had the advantage of a seperate sitting room with TV, fridge and a comfortable sofa. A very civilised way to have a cup of coffee.
The standard of decoration and housekeeping throughout the hotel was excellent.
We really enjoyed the food, there was a good choice and the standard of cooking and presentation was excellent. This applied to breakfast as well as dinner.
All the staff we met were efficient, pleasant and gave a very good standard of service.
We found the Selkirk Arms very well situated to explore the area.

This continues to be one of my favourite hotels in southern Scotland. I returned to stay here with a friend recently and it didn't disappoint. What I love most about family run hotels like these is genuine personalized service, upon check in Douglas (the owner) remembered our favourite room and asked if this is the room we would like to have this time also. The food available downstairs in the bistro is fantastic, there is a wonderful selection of local seafood and the cooked breakfast every morning is to die for! Would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a relaxing weekend break. We will be back, thank you!

We stayed in the Selkirk hotel for a wedding. The staff were excellent and very helpful. The food(especially the breakfast) was good value. The food was made with local produce and locally produced real ale was also available on tap. The location is just of the main high street and ideal for sightseeing in Kirkcudbright.

My wife and I stayed at the Selkirk Arms after visiting the Wickerman Festival on 27th July. We wanted a rest, good meal, and peaceful night's sleep after the festival and were not disappointed on any count. Our room (6) was attractively decorated and spotlessly clean; our evening meal delicious (as was breakfast); and although my wife was afraid the ghost of Robert Burns might appear through the wall he didn't and so we slept well. On top of all this the staff were unusually friendly and efficient (for example, we were brought a second jug of iced water at dinner without even asking for one). After dinner we strolled round the charming town of Kirkcudbright serenaded by swifts and swallows, had a swift swallow of our own, and resolved to return to enjoy more of the Selkirk Arms and the beautiful local area.

We stayed here for a short break with our dog Charlie, who was welcomed for an added fiver per night, which is nice as lots of places just say NO to dogs. Initial impressions of the place were good. The room was decent size, it overlooked the nice rear garden (there's a BUT coming later about this) plenty of room amenities, nice and clean. After a fairly long drive we wanted a quick lunch so opted to try the hotel itself, outside in garden. Both had sandwiches, very nice no complaints all very nice. The staff here are extremely helpful although we had previously read about staff helping you with your luggage, which was not offered to us (no big deal for me just making the point that its either offered or not? ) but in general ALL staff were very pleasant.
I so wanted to give this place more marks (mainly as staff so nice) but there were a few little niggles, nothing major I may add but here they are. As previously mentioned the room overlooked the rear garden, however it could do with some net curtain or something as when curtains opened you can see right into the very large picture window from the garden seating. We also had windows open due to warm weather and of course it's a little noisy. I know this is an old refurbished building but it wouldn't do any harm looking at some sound insulation. Especially as our room was above dining area and they had a the regular rotary dinner going on beneath. Again i was awoken around 6:40am (not an issue for me as I get up at they crack of dawn anyway but for those that like a lie in?) by I presume maids starting cleaning duties. They were easily heard in adjacent rooms where stock was kept again its an old building and I think the walls were that thin if you farted they would faint! Joking aside if you are looking for some quite time and a lie in dint book room 20. Breakfast was good, had better had worse.
All in all we had a nice stay here its in a nice spot and is worth a visit.

We stayed here with a family of four. Room 12 and 16 are perfectly fit for such a party. The rooms are OK, but the disappointment came the next morning. Both showers had but two temperatures: ice cold or burning hot. Whatever we did, we couldn't get the temperature right. Very annoying when you want a fresh start of the day. We told the proprietor. They never had the complaint before (?), and promised to solve it. You better check before booking one of these rooms!

Room Tip: Check or the showers of rooms 12 and 16 are fixex
