Days Inn Gretna Green M74
Ranked #3 of 4 Hotels in Gretna Green
Reviewed August 27, 2013

We stayed at the Days Inn at Gretna for a week in order to visit Loch Lomond, Edinburgh and attend a wedding.
The venue was perfect for this and because it was a single storey building there is virtually no noise from the motorway - in fact the only noise we did hear were teenagers returning to the room opposite which is not the fault of the hotel!
The room was clean, the bed very comfortable and overall we were happy with the sleeping arrangements.
One aspect that did seem a bit farcical was that we had paid for the traditional English breakfast which is taken at the Eat In within the main services - no problem as the food was ok and service was quick EXCEPT that on the Tuesday morning my partner was not hungry so we asked for just porridge and toast expecting that as this was worth about £5 LESS than the cooked breakfast this would be no problem..............WRONG.!
It appears that you have to have what is on the voucher so we ended up paying extra for the porridge which is just ridiculous .......... Welcome Break need to sort this out as it did spoil our first impression despite the fact that the Eat In staff were very friendly and it was clearly not there fault...after all, if a faceless decision maker wants to dictate such nonsense then they have no power to do anything about it but surely this makes no sense...??
The next day we just ordered the two traditional breakfasts and then split it at the table so that my partner had a light bite and I was stuffed .........or rather, I ended up leaving some which is a waste and rather a poor reflection on Welcome Break if anyone was to look as it was not because the food was not good, it was just that even I could not manage 4 sausages etc !!

Other than a poor management decision re food vouchers I thought that it was a good set up and we consider using will use Days Inn again - especially this one.

Room Tip: Get one away from the coach car park as they start up early - so the rooms away from the actual serv...

Stayed 2 nights .Used nus discount then went via laterooms booking which knocks it down to half price. Family room large king sized bed with single bed also in room. All spotless for a budget stay it will be hard to beat. Total cost for room £30 a night if anyone has a nus extra card and books on their web site.
Extra tip if you use twitter follow welcome break and when ordering a breakfast show welcome break on smart phone and only pay £1.99 for full English breakfast (normally £6.99)

We knew this was a budget option but you could be misled by the price you actually pay. Our group of two adults a child, and a dog paid the quoted £61.. + £5 for the dog (why? he doesn't use hot water, towels or sheets) +£7.99 breakfast (cooked) +£5 breakfast (continental). The cooked meals are only offered in the motorway services across the car park.Children under 10 get four cooked breakfast items free although there is no drink involved in this offer. With a bottled smoothie at £2.99 and fresh orange at £2.90 you need to pick and chose.

So that's actually £78 which was the price of other non budget hotels in the area. Our room (no.4) came with a sofa bed that we had to make up ourselves as our reservation hadn't been checked. The bathroom had mould in the grouting, a bath tap that the front had come off and flaking paintwork. The bedroom room also looked as if it had had a hard life and was also noisy with the windows open. Unfortunately you had to have the windows open as the room has no temperature control and was boiling all night. However It was also noisy with the windows closed .The room across the corridor was obviously confused about the concept of a hotel as somewhere to sleep for the night .I now know more than I need to know about someone called Ian.

Positives include the location as it was very easy to rejoin the motorway .The grassy area behind the hotel and petrol station was large enough to walk a dog or let the children have a run and the reception staff were pleasant and amiable.

However I accidentally left a very unique necklace in the room when we left. I phoned the same day but it hadn't been handed in to lost property. This either means the cleaning staff are less than honest or the room cleaning isn't up to standard. Either way, predicable for this standard of hotel.

Handy if driving. Basic motel on service station with facilities at the service station itslef. Not so handy if not driving, though local taxi's around Gretna £5/6. Staff friendly and helpful. Only down side really was that disabled room has a bath, would be better if walk in shower which was an issue for some of the party.

Stayed for one night to break a long journey. It was right on the M74, so convenient as we didnt have to stray from our route. Receptionist was pleasant and the room & bathroom were spacious, clean, tidy & simply decorated. It was ideal for a quick stopover. We had a room at the back so didn't notice any road noise. It was actually better than I was expecting.

We stopped overnight to break our 550 mile journey. The hotel was clean, tidy and nicely decorated. They do not serve cooked breakfast but can purchase a voucher to use at the adjacent service station which was also clean. The bedroom was fine and nicely decorated. The bed was comfortable and the staff was also polite and helpfull. Not at the top end of hotel qualities, but adequate if needed just to rest up and break a journey. The room was surprisingly quiet considering near location of busy road. Not the cheapest of hotels. The only down side was that there is only one chair in a bedroom with no table, if more than one person in a room then they had to sit on the bed.

A reasonably priced and convenient stopover motorway hotel. Difference between Executive/Standard rooms seemed to be a small corner desk and swivel chair. Not really worth the additional cost. Located in a pleasant setting but sadly let down by their Welcome Break restaurants in nearby service station. Food of poor quality and not cheap - large helpings of chips/mash provided to hopefully compensate for same, unsuccessfully. Breakfast is not provided in the hotel complex and is an extra cost . Staff minimal but polite and helpful.

Room Tip: Basic rooms but clean and functional, so serve their purpose - sleep.
