“Will never go back!”
Reviewed November 9, 2009

We stayed at this hotel as a stop over in April and it was so bad we complained and were offered a 2 night break to "restore our faith" - big mistake, nothing had changed, the room we had (an executive double apparently) had mould on the wall behind the curtain, the carpets are still threadbare, the bar is very shabby. The refurb that was supposed to happen in Sept 09 didn't happen. The food is ok, but clearly the chef can't cope if anyone expects a cooked breakfast in under an hour. We were not the only ones who were unhappy and it is such a shame that the staff and management don't seem to care. The only good thing was Judy - the singer/ entertainment, who carried on even if the room was largely empty!

Shabby, needs refurbishing. Evening meals acceptable with plenty of choice but there was a butter famine at breakfast time - my tip is to take your own unless you just love Flora on your toast. We asked for more but it did not materialise.
Hospitality not great.
To complete the picture they also supplied a fire, complete with fire engine running its machinery and lights for nearly two hours in the middle of the night - fortunately not in the bedroom wing.

Like most of the other reviews the hotel needed refurbishing. The badly worn carpets, held together with tape were a health and safety issue. Our bedroom window was propped open with a drinking glass. No tea or coffee in the rooms, just an empty container along side the jug. Told we had to pay £1 as we were "not paying guests" as we had come by coach! Purchased our own down the road at the local gargage. The hotel duty manager didn't seem interested in our complaints. In contrast the food we had was very good, worth the long wait at table. Will not be returning to this or other swallow hotels in case we get the same treatment.

After a long days travelling, we arrived at this hotel and were greeted with a very friendly young man on the front desk... but that is where the good service ceased!

The hotel overall is very shabby and in desperate need of renovations. We feel very sorry for anyone who has their wedding reception here!

Our rooms were dirty - dead blow flies on the window ledge, stains on the chairs and carpets, the bed covered were marked, the showers recess had thick mould spots!

The food was also atrocious. After waiting 20 mins to be served for breakfast, our meals came out another 20 mins later... totally not fit for human consumption. The bacon had a nasty shade of blue, the toast was cold and coffee lukewarm. Add to that dirty bowls and glasses and you have a nice case of salmonella poisoning just waiting to happen!

And unlike other hotels where coffee and tea is complimentary in the rooms, you have to PAY for it at this hotel!

Just not good enough for the money paid... and sadly staff did not care less!

DO NOT STAY HERE! Faulty Towers would be a better option!

I feel sorry for couples who come here to be married. The hotel looks good in the photos but is in dire need of updating. Tea and coffee are not supplied in the bedrooms, you have to purchase a bag from reception for £1. One of the cups in my room was still dirty from the previous occupant. The food is adequate but nothing to write home about. On the plus side, the bathroom was clean and the waiting staff all pleasant. Our room rate was very cheap as we stayed on a special deal.

Just got back from a three day stay at Gretna Hall Hotel, what a relief to be leaving. Service was abissmal, all Eastern Europeans (who were very nice I might add but paid a pittance) who couldn't understand English apart from one guy who was barman, porter ,waiter, you name it he was that man. Food was edible, but service was a joke. Made a complaint to the manageress but it didn't make any differnce. Bar was so dingy you were glad to get out of it to go to bed. Charges for tea and coffe in room were £1...where else would you get that. We were under the impression that this was a Swallow hotel, but apparently it is owned by three local guys who must be making a fortune.
Get your act together guys, you have the perfect spot for 'stop offs' on the way up north, but one coach driver I spoke to won't be going back there....sensible man!!!!
We booked through EASY BREAKS but never again...only good thing was the weather, it was glorious which meant we didn't have to spend much time looking at the dark and dismal walls in the hotel.
