Owner description: A fine example of a Scottish tower-house castle, Cardoness Castle was built in the later 15th century as the fortified residence of the McCullochs. Cardoness Castle is a well-preserved ruin where you can admire the exquisite architectural detail of this still magnificent structure, including the splendid fireplace and wall-cupboard where the family's best silverware was displayed, touch the intricate stone carvings and soak up the superb views over the beautiful Fleet Bay to the Solway Firth beyond. Open summer only

We went here with our 3 children and it was really educational. The kids loved seeing an old castle and exploring it throughout. There are signs telling you about the history of the castle and lovely gift shop as well.

Take a short walk out of Gatehouse of Fleet along a roadside path heading eastwards. It's a pretty walk and about a mile out of the town you come across an imposing tower.

Imagine people living here centuries ago. There were no roads. The land would have been less well cultivated, and families were constantly in danger of raids and feuds.

You've arrived at Cardoness Castle. A stunning fortified dwelling with views up the valley and down the estuary to Fleet Bay. Let your imagination soar. This is an impressive attraction and well worth a visit.

You can park in the small car park and visit the shop there. There is plenty information on the local area and the castle (ruins) and you can walk up as far into the ruins as you feel able to managed. Another local place to see is Vinnie Hill, you can clamber up the hill and get a super view of the town of Gatehouse of Fleet. We did this between Christmas and New Year, but ideally it would be better to do this in the summer time.
