“Nice stay in Gatehouse”
Reviewed March 6, 2014 via mobile

Have stayed at the Cally many times. It remains my favorite hotel in Gatehouse. The atmosphere is classic country house hotel. Food and service are very good. Rooms are nice, but don't expect updated. For some reason, that is ok and fits the atmosphere. Great place to get away.

Had a lovely stay that was sadly wasted on us as we didn't arrive until midnight then left the next morning. Facilities looked fab, just sad we didn't get to use them! Wonderfully old fashioned and the staff where faultless. More hotels should take note on service and charm Cally Palace provides. However, I noticed that some aspects required attention, there where some cracks in the pool terrace walls and it was just starting to look in places like it needed some TLC. The room was roasting, but I appreciate that most people would want this and finally the room next door had a yappy dog, again not sure how this could be dealt with. Overall we enjoyed our stay, next time we will arrive in afternoon to take advantage of pool, table tennis, croquet, golf and all the other things that are offered.

What a stunning venue at Christmas! The hotel has old-fashioned charm with stunning Christmas trees in all main areas. The staff were extremely welcoming when we arrived assisting us with our luggage. This was a pre-Christmas treat for myself, my eight year old daughter and my parents. The food was fabulous and one evening there was a dance during dinner. We all thoroughly enjoyed this including my daughter and all other diners loved her joining in. The staff were fabulous, local and could not do enough for us. Following dinner, we retired to the lounge to sit beside the open fires and play a selection of board games that they had.
The pool area was lovely, very clean and quiet. We had the pool to ourselves most afternoons which was fab.
The rooms we had were beautiful, with stunning views both at front and back. They were very clean, had coffee and biscuits (along with a small jug of port!), beds were turned down before bed....everything you could possibly want!
Will definitely return!

Just had a lovely three night stay at the Cally.
The room was massive paying just a miserly £10 per night per person to upgrade to deluxe was well worth it.
The staff were the most pleasant friendly and efficient I can honestly say I have come across in a long time. The chef prepared a separate menu to accommodate for a vegan and vegetarian with lots of wonderful choices.
Nice to see a jacket and tie rule in the dining room it all adds to the atmosphere, good food, wine and a pianist all made dining an event.
The grounds are marvellous, acres of woodland walks, it's own golf course, swimming pool etc. The hotel is dog friendly, they use local products and employ lots of local staff and use a lot of local goods, the cheese board was particularly tasty.
A place you can return to again and again.

Room Tip: The West side of the hotel has a separate staircase leading outside if you've got a dog with you...

Cally Palace definitely old fashioned and room decor in 'faded glory' category but it is a sweet place. Not cutting edge (if that's what you expect in an hotel) but it has great charm and a lovely atmosphere. Food was well cooked, well presented and clearly made with very high quality ingredients. Agree with previous reviewer's description of the place as Miss Marple's territory, but was so charming will definitely come back.

Ran this event at the Cally yesterday as we'd had such a good experience last year. We were not disappointed, the same quality food and excellent service all at a reasonable price. We had 73 dining in and they all commented on how well the event went. Have pencilled in the event for next year with the hotel, a winning formula. Kippers for breakfast, yum!! Well done Bob and the staff and thank you.

Situated in parkland, an hotel with a bit of an Agatha Christie feel....... a very quiet but pleasant atmosphere. Purpose was primarily golf as the course is at the front door. Enjoyed the peace and quiet. Moved to a top floor room after initial placing in a ground floor room which was somewhat dark with nets over the windows. Room was large and pleasant with a lovely view over the 15th. Whilst decor was a bit outdated it was a large well appointed room complete with a shower room and a separate bathroom and a comfortable seating area by the window. All staff most pleasant and helpful. Food had good choice, was well cooked and presented if service a little slow on occasions. Atmosphere in the dining room was very, very quiet and I did expect to see Miss Marple seated close by? Not really my style but quite charming.

The golf course was interesting....challenging on a couple of holes, doglegs and lake come to mind.....lost a few balls the first couple of days...water hazards and rough. Not on Golf GPS courses which added to the challenge! Came into its own when the sun appeared and you could see the attractive setting nestled in the gentle surrounding hills. Space provided to keep clubs and trolleys and dry off wet clothing.....essential to scottish golf. Did not use spa and pool facilities but looked OK. Other friendly golfers around and no problems with tee times as not too many golfers staying.

Buy the excellent Poachers Relish from nearby Gatehouse of Fleet! Will return for a short golf break.
